Enjoyed a night's stay at the chateau. We arrived late so didn't get a chance to tour the town. The owner provided some snacks and wine for us which we had for our dinner...our long drive was very tiring so we didn't have the energy to go out for dinner. The hotel is very conveniently located about 1 km from the cave center.

I just love this hotel. I relish peace and quiet on vacation and Castel Merle delivered. Magnificent setting above the Vezere river and sweeping views of farms and forests. There is a glen below the butte where archaeologists are working on ancient cave dwellings. I was there one day in late afternoon just before sunset and the only sound was the trill of a bird surrounded by absolute silence. This excerpt from a Steven Lawhead books explains it more profoundly than I could. (This is from a novel where a 20th century man mysteriously goes back in time to the Great Britain of the ancient Celts) As I sat nursing my misery, it occurred to me that the hillside had grown very quiet. No, not grown quiet—it had always been so. And not merely quiet: that is, not just silent—as in the absolute absence of sound—but still, hushed, and peaceful. I heard a world at rest with a deep and natural quiescence. As I sat there, with my arms wrapped around my knees, abject misery slowly metamorphosed into a tranquility that I had never, ever, known in the world that I had left behind. Affordable and comfortable hotel with delightful hosts. I hope to have the good fortune go there again.

Before arriving in Montignac we were already suspicious. We had sent an email a couple of weeks before, to ask if there were any specific restrictions or precautions we had to be aware of, considering the Covid-19 emergency. They never replied. One week later we emailed them again in French and asked if they had received our message, and they simply replied that for any questions regarding our stay we'd need to contact the "centrale de reservation" (which doesn't make any sense as we booked our stay on their website). How can you ignore a concerned customer? When we arrived, the lady at the desk wasn't too friendly and didn't even ask for our ID's (something that would be illegal in other countries, but apparently in France it's ok). This is even more disturbing during a pandemic, when hotels should be able to trace all their guests. BUT we had to pay even before seeing the room, which was pretty weird too. The room was tiny. It was clean and with a nice view of the backyard, but there wasn't a proper bathroom. Only the toilet was behind a door. The shower and the sink were in the bedroom. It was super hot and no air conditioning. We wouldn't recommend it.
