Very disappointing. This is priced like a luxury hotel but it does not live up to the price point. The only thing this hotel has going for it is the in-room hot-spring tubs and I have seen that done better at other properties. This is a simple hotel with clean rooms and nice views in a pretty location. Other than that there are no perks or amenities. We tried the restaurant and it was just ok. Nothing special. The main dishes were small and blah. My husbands pork was not great. The wine selection was mediocre. Advertised as family friendly, there were no kid options on the menu outside of a $40 buffet for any kid 4 and older. The hotel hot-springs are also just there. Nothing special. Not worth the money we spent. No in-room minibar and no lounge for the regular folks staying there. The hotel is also far from town so going out to get something else to eat is a little bit of a pain. I expected more of an oasis considering its location. Very disappointed in this stay.

If this is a budget hotel than I get it or for back packers. Speak zero English and went to Onsen if that’s what you call it???? there was absolutely no English showing how to get there in the front desk wouldn’t even show me the way. It was a total dump. Was staying at Marriot and it was included so I went to hot springs. The worst nightmare you would want to experience

Izu Peninsula, the nation's largest hot springs resort, is about 2-hours train ride from Tokyo. Shuzenji Hot Springs is the oldest resort in Izu. River and its traditional Japanese style wooden structures are scattered in the large garden of about 5,000 ㎡. There is more than 140 years history. Many celebrated writers and painting artist, including Yokoyama Taikan and Kawabata Yasunari, are among the frequent guests. It is located at the center of Shuzenji Hot Springs, a short distance from sightseeing spots. Arai Ryokan is the inn where you can certainly enjoy the every essence of Japanese nature of four seasons, the traditional culture, art and architecture. All guest rooms are the traditional architecture and the rooms themselves overlook either the Katsura River or the garden or the courtyard with its large pond full of carp to enjoy the beauty of each season. Among the main attractions are the baths. The main bath, the Tenpyo Dai Yokudo, are built in 1933, with all cypress, by Nara Era(the 8th century) architectural style. The outdoor bath is located in Japanese garden and the family bath can be reserved for private use. All bath are the natural hot springs. The meal is kaiseki cuisine featuring the local fresh sea food and vegetable. Both dinner and breakfast are served in guest rooms. Meat dish or vegetarian meals are available for dinner also we can serve a continental breakfast. Please make request upon booking. The Bamboo Lane which is ranked ★★ in Michelin Green Guide Japan 2009 and 2011, Shuzenji Temple of 1200 years' history are short distance from the ryokan, 3-minutes walk. Also, you can enjoy the panoramic view of Mt. Fuji and the Suruga Bay from the peak of Mt. Daruma which is 20-minutes drive from the ryokan.
We stayed one night. The ryokan is everything you’d have dreamt of a traditional onsen experience. Our room is a river-facing, the river is literally flowing next to the room. The bamboo trail is directly opposite making an impeccable view. We suspected in autumn the room will also see an abundant maple trees. There are 4 free baths, the outdoor and ‘big bath house’ are the best. The free private bath is a very nice touch, good for family and couples. Food is very good as well, filled with some many delicate touches and seasonal picks, if you eat too fast or too big a mouthful it’s likely you’d have missed a few good things without realising. The ryokan’s size and setting is most enjoyable. Inner courtyards and ponds are beautifully curated adding to the aged beauty of the buildings. Aged trees and streams, every corner, indoor or outdoor, it’s a delight to discover. The neighbourhood is a nice little pocket perfect to explore for a good day/half-day. Will recommend arriving a bit early to explore the vicinity including Shuzenji and it’s back-hill area. The Main Street along the ryokan also offers some shops to explore for a snack or souvenir. Would highly recommend to all who crave a serene onsen experience. Note: the river could be ‘loud’ for some as it is not a small stream but a constant hush of water. Some will consider it sounding like white noise. If you need to sleep in absolute silence consider courtyard-facing rooms instead.

This place offer high value for money! Recommend Pro: - Big ryokan, room is very spacious (in Japan standard) - 2 private onsen room (no extra cost), you can just use it when the room is free - Outdoor onsen and indoor hotbath available - Food is decent - Offer daily lounge for drink, and late night ramen snack (very yummy) - Service is nice - Location is great, right outside bus stop and you can walk around Shuzenji easily Con - You may hear the room next door as the structure is old, but we are feel it is acceptable

Beautiful place, however it's faraway from everything, way off the grid! Very small signs for the hotel and Japanese only signs you can get lost. Be prepared to pay an additional ¥300 bath tax, that's not included. Wi-Fi and phone reception is really bad or not available at all. Okay at best! I gave it an average mark however not impressed with the staff very reserved not outgoing! Tokyu Hotel chain?

Discover the warmth of simple mountain village, let the pleasant murmur of the Kano River. Rejoice over the blessing of overflowing 100% natural hot spring baths. Our cuisine takes advantage of the geographical merits of Izu and uses plenty of seasonal fresh seafood and vegetables.
My boyfriend and I visited Sagasawakan for three nights and had the most magnificent stay. The warm service and meticulous attention to detail went above and beyond our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we knew the reviews of this place do not do it justice. We stayed in the Western-style room with private onsen and we highly recommend it. The meals here were exquisite and in many cases, better than $200 omakase experiences in Kyoto and Tokyo. Although most of the staff do not speak English, this was no problem at all and we were able to effectively communicate. On our last day, it was raining as we were planning to leave to catch the bus to the train station. Despite the fact that we left an hour before the complimentary daily shuttle bus, the manager insisted we be driven in her personal car to the train station to avoid getting wet. She even gave us an umbrella to take. I cannot recommend this hotel enough - we will definitely be back if we ever return to Japan!

「New Kaikatei Izumi」is renewed June 2016. We are specialised in serving 「Kaiseki -traditional Japanese course meals. Our chief chef Takeyasu Ishii was given two stars by Michelin for 4years(from 2008 to 2011), the world's best-known guide to hotels and restaurants. We are located in front of Suruga Bay. You may enjoy rooms with open air baths & Ocean view. About [Kaiseki] (traditional Japanese meal brought in courses) Kaiseki is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal prepared from fresh, seasonal ingredients. Some dishes are served hot, while others are served chilled or at room temperature — just the way they're meant to be enjoyed.
The room size is relatively smaller then those tatami rooms. The service staff are very good service. The onsen is average. This hotel is very near to the ferry point for the ferry to Shimizu. Overall is good hotel, but fif the price abit steed.

Itoen Hotel Toi Izu is right on the waterfront. Basically most of the rooms are ocean view and may afford good sunsets. Getting to this hotel can be a real task, as there is no train station nearby. Our room the first night, was on the 5th floor, close to the elevator, with a private outdoor hot tub. If you have good hearing, stay away from room 501. The rooms in this establishment with a private hot tub are very large, and very tired. Unfortunately due to the location of our room, it was impossible to have a good night sleep due to the Onsen machinery nearby. Fortunately the following day we were moved to a similar room on the same floor, further away from the machinery, here we had an excellent night sleep. From both the rooms we had, there were amazing sunsets, and nice ocean views. This establishment has a plan which included dinner and breakfast. Acceptable, though disappointing. The sushi and sashimi were a little funky, that left us wondering about the quality and freshness, i.e. terrible. Therefore, the second night we passed on the sushi and sashimi. The salad bar - not much there, very disappointing. They do change the menu slightly day to day. During our stay they had all you can eat crab legs. Earlier the same week, we stayed at a Hotel that is part of the same chain, whose meals were substantially better. i.e. food quality, freshness and variety. Would we recommend this establishment: yes, with some reservations Would we return to this establishment: yes, provided that we had the room as we did on our second night.

This ryokan (Japanese style hotel) was not bad but just didn’t have anything special that makes me feel I’d like to go back or I would like to recommend. I would probably not go back. PROS: - They accommodated vegetarian meals. There are ryokans that don’t do, so I’m grateful that they did that. - The big bathtub in the room was nice. It was supposed to be “roten buro” which means an open air bath, but it was actually in-door bathroom with big windows that can be opened. After opening the windows, I was able to see the ocean far away, but since there are buildings and houses in-between, the view was not so spectacular. But still the deep and big tub felt nice. - Staff was friendly. CONS: - Seafood was disappointing. Since Ise-ebi (Japanese lobster) was in season, I chose the dinner option that includes Ise-ebi sashimi and live abalone. But both didn’t taste special. - They don’t take credit card. I used a booking site Jalan to make a reservation. Probably because my credit card is issued in the US, Jalan didn’t accept it, which is not this ryokan’s fault. There was an option to pay at the ryokan, but this ryokan only accepts cash. The bill was going to be about $800 for 3 people. So, it was quite a lot to carry with me. - This onset town is remote enough but doesn’t have much to see.
