A real “get away from it all”

Reviewed By Andrew W

This was my second visit to the Schledorns Seehof and it was just as good as the first. It stands all by itself on the edge of a small lake (which takes about 30mins to walk round) surrounded by forest. You can set off for numerous walks, all very well marked, directly from the hotel, or just lie at the edge of the lake in the sunshine and take a swim in it if you wish! There is a road that runs along the side of the hotel but this is not too intrusive. There is also a branch railway line running behind it, but this summer they were upgrading the line a few miles away so there was a ‘rail replacement bus service’, which being Germany ran perfectly to time, and no trains running past the hotel! There is a busier road that runs along the far side of the lake and on a quiet evening this can make its presence felt, especially the large juggernaut lorries. It is furnished as a typical Black Forest inn and many of the rooms have balconies looking out over the lake. It is very clean, as you tend to take for granted in this area, and the free WiFi works very well. The hotel is run as an annex of the main Hotel Schledorns in the nearby village of Alt Glas Hutten (a 15min walk away). For some reason, I had to go to the main hotel to check in, but after that everything was at the Seehof. The staff seem to rotate between the main hotel and the Seehof which meant for the first few nights there was a completely different team on duty. They all performed their duties very well, but there was no opportunity for any rapport to build up between staff and guests. The lady who is in charge of running the Seehof was on duty for the last few days and is very good. Since my last visit they have stopped offering half-board and the only option for eating at the hotel is to choose from the a la carte menu which is not the most extensive I have ever seen and might be a bit restricting if you were staying for longer than a week. Would I stay there again? Yes, certainly. It is a wonderful place to spend a few days away from hustle and bustle. If you want a hotel that is in a town surrounded by lots of shops, bars, and restaurants the the Seehof is not for you. If you want to enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature then you will love it. NB For CPAP users, there is a power point beside the bed.

Great hotel for families

Reviewed By stevepilamb

Stayed here on short-fuse ski trip and enjoyed every minute. Stayed in the family suite deluxe- very nice 2 floor room with plenty of space for our family. Was expensive- cost over $900 USD total for two nights, but we needed the room and this was one of the few available. Breakfast was fantastic- my family is picky eaters and everyone found something. We skipped the German dinner, which cost extra. No way my kids would eat any of it anyway. Plenty of other dining options in the area. Tip 1: leave early if you’re skiing on the weekend. The cars will jam up the highway and you’ll easily spend an hour + in traffic going up the mountain. Tip 2: the outdoor pool is great but you might get an eyeful from the small sauna facing the pool with a big window. Yep, you guessed it, they’re in their birthday suits, lol. Tip 3: 1 complimentary drink per guest per night. Also get credit at the bar if you decline housekeeping. Tip 4: For military families, they didn’t accept my VAT form so got hit with the German tax. That was my gripe with the hotel, but it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker for such a nice place. Still, you should try asking them about it. Maybe with enough inquires they’ll start accepting the VAT forms.

Nice and clean but no wauw

Reviewed By Jørgen B

Going on a late skiing holiday mid March. The weather was unfortunately not appropriate, so I only stayed one night. The staff was very friendly but spoke too fast considering that they could hear that German is neither my first or second language. The bed was way too soft for my back, and the pillow was very "German" - very big, and at first you think it will support your head, but after half an hour it is completely flat. The food in the restaurant was OK, but nothing special. If you want the menu you should preorder. Room and hotel in general nice and clean.

This hotel proposed on « booking.com » a special rate for Ukrainian refugees (it was actually the only reason why we choosed it). But we had the unpleasant surprise to find out that, according to the owner’s very particular «logic»… Ukrainian refugees who managed to leave Ukraine and are currently hosted by friends are not considered to be refugees anymore, and therefore cannot benefit from the special rate proposed by the hotel for Ukrainian refugees (!). Cherry on the cake, the hotel’s owner behaved as if WE (myself, my daughter and our temporary host) were the ones trying to cheat on him by asking for the hotel’s advertised special rate! We had of course all the official documents proving our Ukrainian refugee status, but he just didn’t care. Well, we didn’t want to spoil our weekend so we paid what he asked, the full rate for the room. Disgusting.

And I thought a nice atmosphere in the restaurant, which was not "fancy" but did a buffet which suited myself and my son (as he could pick lots of what he wanted). It has a lovely sauna and shower. The location is better than the uphill bit of Feldberg but not perhaps so good as the downhill bit.

Extermelely arrogant and rude owner

Reviewed By Simon_7_7_7_22222222

Overall bad experience due to owner and duty manager being exceptionally rude and arrogant. Attempts to provide feedback in person were met with hostility and disregard. The owner and duty manager quite simply don't care about their guests and have no interest in listening to any feedback. Be aware that if there is any small detail of your stay in the hotel that you are not happy with, the owner and duty manager will not be at all interested in trying to resolve. Expect to be charged extra for things that you would generally expect to be free in most quality and reputable hotels. We paid approximately €400 per night to stay at the hotel, and so would expect certain items to be available free of charge, as would be the case in most non-budget hotels around the world. For example, a small jug of tap water is charged at €2.50. This is not mineral water, or any other special type of water. It is just tap water. The hotel also charged for milk. I don't have an issue with being charged for a carton of milk, if the hotel thinks that it is necessary. However, we were provided with an already open, half full carton of milk and were charged €3.50. When I attempted to discuss these relatively minor issues with the hotel, the owner and duty manager reacted in an extraordinarily arrogant and hostile way. I was told in a very rude manner that this was the way that they do things in Germany, and I was made to feel unwelcome and discriminated against as a non German guest.

Lovely hotel in Feldberg area

We stayed two nights at the Gruner Baum. Our experience was really nice. Starting from the outside, with lovely landscapes and views, it can be already see that is a great place to lay down and relax. When you enter the Gasthof, you can feel the Black Forest ambience, with nice details and decoration. The room was spacious and with a nice view. Also, we recommend the restaurant, which has a lot of typical Black Forest details. We want to point out the quality and quantity of the breakfast. It was actually a nice surprise as you have a wide variety of options to choose from. Finally, we want to thank all the team of the Gasthof as they really made us feel like at home
