ZaiYang Inn is the first inn repaired with residential in Chaozhou which built in the Qing Dynasty. It made up with two parts, the whole house appears in typical building style of Qing Dynasty. There are some scenic spots and historic sites near here.
Old traditional Chinese house well maintained and very well located near the pedestrian street. Beautiful environment to taste the local tea. Close to the famous bridge and all the small shops. The room is very small, but understandable due to the original architecture. The downside is they don't provide breakfast! Friendly staff.

You get a bed, TV, couch, toilet and shower. In the shower there are shampoo and soap. There's air conditioning. And that's about it. You don't get a disposable shower, no bathrobe, no wardrobe, no safe, no disposable slippers. The bathroom door is peeling. There's hair on the basin. The toilet roll is thin. And you are provided with disposable cups who you are not sure if they change. Basic, not built for comfort and aesthetics. For the traveller who only comes back for showering and the bed.

I spent 12 nights at Chaozhou Hotel for my business. Chaozhou Hotel is one of the most expensive hotels in Chaozhou. However, the money you pay isn’t worth for the serve. The rooms are very old. The beds are not comfortable. The carpets in the room are very dirty. The bathroom is really out of date. If you are not a tiny person, the shower might be quite difficult for you. The hotel personnel does not speak English. The breakfast is the worst part. There is no international breakfast. Instead of small tables, you have to sit on large tables with people you don’t know. You might not have chance to find fork and knife. Even if you find, you might question the hygene of the cafeteria. So as a foreigner, this hotel is not comfortable.

Stayed 3 nights at Vienna Chaozhou Square. Location is away from attractions but OK. Take a short taxi ride to major attractions. Hotel layout is (could be) 5-star but dated and not to standard. Cleaniness is OK. Front desk staff are excellent. They call taxi using their own phone and paid for you (And guest paid back when return. Because here, they call and pay with taxi APP). They also give you advice on taxi and tricycle pricing. Buffet breakfast is OK. The baby oyster congee is excellent. Restaurant service is not to standard. Food labels are either missing or incorrect - they just put it on but don't care what the food item is. Renovation is required and so as better restaurant staff training and pay more attention on some details.

Jinlong is a very traditional Chinese hotel targeted at locals. What they have done recently is to refurbish some rooms which they branded as "luxury rooms", and these are good deals. In the place of the wooden furniture is a huge sofa. We stayed in one and the room is huge ... the double bed sleeps 4 of us comfortably, and there still plenty of space for my kids to play. While may not be everyone's style, the overkill of marble and ceramic tiles do work. The room was very clean, and TV has multiple local channels. A common complaint by overseas travellers is that hotel mattresses are hard, which is also the case here. Booking these rooms will require a call to the hotel, which means you need to speak Chinese. The website is not updated so the luxury rooms do not appear on its booking page. Or walk in, since it seems the hotel occupancy isn't high outside peak travel periods. Location-wise the hotel is in a good area, across the road from the main pedestrian street. Service staffs are low key and formal, but are flexible and will help when asked. Hotel has 2 restaurants, even massage rooms and fitness rooms. Rate does not include breakfast, but they have a popular dimsum restaurant downstairs which serve up decent inexpensive food. The travel agency next to it will also handle combo ticketing and train/bus tickets. The reason for us it doesn't get 5* is the issue with cigarette smoke. While smoking in lift lobbies are prohibited, local tourists do it anyway. And when they smoke in their rooms, the smoke creep into other rooms under the door and through the central air system. On some nights we were breathing plenty of second hand smoke (for hours). Locals smoke plenty and this is not the hotel's fault (and likely the same in other establishments in town and out), but it does mar our experience nevertheless.
