AA Rated - Highly Recommended Carmel Villa is Calvinia's Monument of Love! Carmel Villa is a historic Victorian guest house built in 1904 with a great romantic history based in Calvinia, Northern Cape. Come and join us and experience the old fashioned charm which is rare to find. There are 3 double bedrooms available in the Main House all with queen size beds (sleep maximum 4 persons) and a sitting area in each room. Breakfast is served in the main house lounge and there is also a general sitting room for guests. Additional are Self-catering Chalets (not part of main house): Chalet 1 - sleeps 2 people (double bed) Chalet 2 - sleeps 4 people (has 2 seperete rooms with 2 single beds each) Breakfast is not served for self-catering chalets but can be arranged at an additional cost. Electric blankets in ALL rooms. Air-conditioning in all rooms in Main House and heaters in garden cottages.
Looking for an overnight stop we were lucky enough to find Carmel Villa. Stayed in self catering units, which were awesome with super-comfy beds. Owners went out of way to assist with parking and arranging late dinner at Blou Naartjie. Highly reccommended.

Our fully furnished units feature a luxurious king size bed and a couch that can accommodate a child. Baby cots will be made available on demand. Air-conditioning and electric blankets will ensure a good night's rest no matter the weather. A fully fitted kitchen and dining area enable guests to cater for themselves, as well as an open-plan living area with DSTV and a built-in braai. Nowhere else is the starry sky so clear, the air so fresh and the silence so apparent. We offer you the unique opportunity to break away from your everyday routine and experience a piece of nature up close and personal.
A warm welcome from Hendrina started us off on the right foot.Everything was top notch - highlights included a lovely large unit, great shower with steaming hot water, and a super comfortable huge bed with large fluffy pillows. Cool tiled floors were a challenge on a cold winter night, but I imagine would be great in the height of summer. Looking for things to improve, my only suggestion is a few more shelves or drawers to store clothes etc would be welcome.

Country hotels should close down, I have been to three of them which are Springbok, Calvinia and Upington. The first time I was at Springbok I was with the institution I worked for previously and it was fine no complaints. I went to Upington with my current institution and it was fine no complaints. I went to Calvinia in February 2022 and the room I was booked into had no fridge while my colleagues had fridges and then I had to request it from reception which they brought, then it was the Wi-Fi oh my God I was tired of walking up and down to request everything that is supposed in my room then in the morning the lady- I am not sure if she is the owner or what had an attitude at breakfast the quantity of milk she had poured in a jug was to little to serve cereals for all three of my colleagues and then the omlette they made was very bad. NO more Calvinia country hotel.

A comfortable stay in a farmhouse atmosphere close to the town centre. Every room has its own entrance, dstv, en suite bathroom and kitchenette with a bar fridge. The family room can accommodate five persons, 3 single beds and a double bed.
We booked and paid for a 1-night stay during a tour a week in advance. We looked at the photos of the various rooms and decided on room 4 as we liked the way it looked with a private braai area. On our arrival at 16:00 on the day, we were unable to find anyone at reception (a door) for a while and eventually 'n small child who passed by went to call "grandma". We were hurriedly given keys and told that if we want anything to eat that the OK and Spar would be closing at 20:00 and 19:00 respectively. We were told that we could use the garage parking, but the door is manual and a little sticky. We were also informed that if we wished to braai that we would have to wait for other guests to first remove their luggage from the braai area (luggage all over the place) After a visit to Spar to get some food we waited till after 19:15 when the other guests collected their luggage. By this time it was too late for us top braai. We ended up going to bed without braaing. I am normally an easy sleeper and will sleep in almost any place given the chance, but the mattress was just so uncomfortable that I could not sleep much. The bad smell did not help either. The next morning we could not get out of the place soon enough. Perhaps others are lucky to get a better room, but room 1 is a room from hell and I pray other visitors are not tortured with accommodation I would not even house a servant in. We stayed in a number of other places which were great. Calvinia Guesthouse was disappointing.

If in the Tankwa Karoo, stop at Middelpos and stay in the hotel... That's an amazing experience and a trip back in time... Old style decoration, traditional home made food for the dinner, and a nice fire to keep warm in the lounge. As a non Afrikaans speaking person, I missed a lot, as the owner was more keen to speak afrikaans than english...
