Riverside is a recently updated guesthouse that is owned and operated by an Indonesian-French couple, Fadill and Marie. This charming guesthouse is located directly overlooking the Bohorok river, in the heart of the jungle, and only minutes away from the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Together, Fadill and Marie welcome guests from all over the world, helping them organize their holidays in Bukit Lawang and North Sumatra, making sure their stay is a safe and memorable one.
Welcome to a very neat, comfortable and well appointed guesthouse. We stayed in the upper terrace room, which proved great for sitting out and enjoying the view across the river (complete with wild Orangutan on one occasion, so bring binoculars). Our hosts organised airport pickup and local activities without a hitch. Excellent food is available close by. We loved it and spent an extra night to make 6 nights in all.

Bukit Lawang is a peaceful village in the province of North Sumatra. The location is a main access point into the green heart of Sumatra: the Leuser Ecosystem. You will have the unique chance to view rehabilitated and wild orangutans in a guided tour through the lush forests of the region. Staying in the Ecolodge Bukit Lawang is not only a unique experience but also a personal statement in support of sustainable tourism. The facility provides an unprecedented opportunity to be immersed in North Sumatra’s unique rainforest environment while directly contributing to the conservation of the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan – with proceeds donated to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme. The Ecolodge Bukit Lawang was established to complement and serve as an outlet for the activities of the Bohorok Environmental Education Centre. Herein we aim to increase awareness towards biodiversity conservation and the implementation and management of proper ecotourism.
I stayed Ecolodge during summer school holiday with my family to encounter Orang Utang. I did not expect much as the location is quite remote area, but found that Ecolodge was not just eco friendly accommodation but also pretty cosy accommodation. I think they provide best quality facility and hospitality among accommodations in Bukit Lawang. Staffs accommodated all of our request in timely manner. They provided us connecting room at new building, and there was a charming loft space which my daughter liked it. Foods were mainly Indonesian food selection but it was tasty. As they provide eco friendly environment, there is no WIFI in guest rooms(WIFI available at restaurant), No hair dryer, no TV and no Mini Bar and no AC. But to enjoy nature, it did not matter for us at all. We can enjoy sunrise, river view and sounds from our balcony and in the night it’s just nice temperatures without AC cause it’s surrounded by forest and river. Hotel staff helped us to arrange Orang Utang tour, and we could find two Orang Utangs and a monkey, which was awesome experience! I recommend Ecolodge for those who want to find comfortable accommodation in Bukit Lawang.

Food is the most satisfying things in this place. The room was big enough for more extra bed, the staff is helpful, the minus things is the river in not right in front of the inn.. but a little bit further.

We stayed at Thomas' Retreat back in 2013 (when the place wasn't renovated). What I remembered most is the kind people and the great location. Thomas is an excellent guide if you want to take a tour through the jungle.

A stunning three story hotel set in the heart of Bukit Lawang with breath-taking views of the river and jungle. All rooms are Western style with designer en-suite bathrooms and hot water and are built into the rock face. Just a short walk to see many types of exotic animals including the endangered Sumatran Orangutan. Hotel provides 24hr service and has a bar, restaurant and ping pong. Room rates are IDR350,000 to IDR2,500,000 per night
Hotel Orangutan is a wonderful Place. Everything works perfect from the beginning with the pick up at the airport in Medan until the transfer back. We stayed 3 nights in Hotel Orangutan. It was the first time for my husband, our son (5years) and me in the jungle and the welcome of the staff was very familiar and friendly. We got a nice room on the top of the hill. (Good Training) The room was very simple but clean. (Close the door because the monkeys are very naughty. The cold shower took some getting used to for spoiled Europeans, but we were in the jungle and not in the wellness hotel. We booked an one day tracking tour with Arman and Imam. The guys were awesome! They told us much about the jungle and about the orang utans, answered all our questions and they carry our son nearly 90% of the way! And it was sometimes a very sophisticated way. They are really tough guys. We had so much fun with them. They entertained Lenny (build a house of leafs for the mice and showed him how to throw a knife) so that my husband and I could enjoy the orang utans. We got much delicious food which heroically protected them from the macaque. From the beginning we felt like friends. All guides talked together where are the orang utans and if we saw some other guides with tourists we are very lucky with the two guys! They are competently, friendly, smart and funny and took care of us in a special way. But all of the guys who worked in the hotel were very courteous. They all are so lovely with Lenny and if something was missing they brought it during five minutes (they went to the next shop and bought it). Really fantastic! We thank the whole team for the wonderful 4 days we should be their guests. It was like coming to friends. We will come back in a few year for sure.

Bukit Lawang Hill Resort facilitated WiFi, hot shower, and evening briefing for the environment study case as part of our SUMECO. The restaurant provides fresh healthy food, so as vegetarian dishes - no palm oil or instant foods, with panoramic views covering all over the Bukit Lawang village area, Bohorok river, and Gunung Leuser National Park.
A good place to get away from people, or, on the contrary, to get to know them closer. Both introversial me and my socially active, nice and extraversial friend liked the place a lot. People living there are very nice. Accommodation neat and comfortable, and every sunrise and when the night comes you can see the whole small world beneath you and hear the music of Jungle. As Claude Levi-Strauss wrote: Music is a language by whose means messages are elaborated, that such messages can be understood by the many but sent out only by few, and that it alone among all the languages unites the contradictory character of being at once intelligible and untranslatable - these facts make the creator of music a being like the gods.

Indra Valley Inn is located in Bukit Lawang on the bank of the Bohorok River, only a three minute walk to the entrance of Gunung Leuser National Park. It offers riverside accommodation with 2 standard rooms and 4 new deluxe rooms (with hot water showers) which just finished in April 2016 and August 2017, respectively. All rooms have a beautiful view of the jungle and the river. Indra Valley Inn also has a tasty restaurant and offers wildlife trekking so guests can experience the Sumatran Orungutan in their natural environment. The owner Obiwan is a very experienced 3rd generation trekking guide.
Dishonest river tubing package and dishonest staff. Frowsy room with minimum facilities. Money oriented and careless regarding your family safety. Absolutely not worth of your time and money. my advice: do not spend your time here.

We enjoyed our stay at the Ida Guest house. We had a basic room (mosquito net, bed, bathroom, toilet etc) and had a comfortable 3 nights here (1 night in the jungle). The room is basic with no hot water, but you are in quite a remote area. WiFi was great throughout. We booked a tour to the jungle overnight through the guest house. This is a must! The guides were brilliant and it was great to see all the wildlife. We had only 4 in our group and really enjoyed staying in the jungle. Mudhi was very helpful throughout and provided vegan food at his restaurant when we were hungry. It was all reasonably priced. He also looked after our bikes. Lovely shared seating area outside and it is in an excellent location. Things to note, there are no cash machines and he charged me 3% on a card payment. Also we arrived when it was dark on bikes, the local people were rather intimidating and persistent. They followed us aggressively on bikes even when we told them we were fine and had a hotel.
