Hot water issue

Reviewed By Keith B

This hotel is in a great location. You’re right off of I-77 which leads to Cleveland and Akron. You are also on SR 18 which is the surface route to downtown Akron, not far from your suburban Fairlawn location. Plenty of restaurants on this busy road. Checked in early afternoon and was given a room on the third floor. The hotel is clearly older, in fact I later found out it was built in the mid 70s and converted to a Holiday Inn around twenty years ago. It’s worn in some areas, but my room was fine, at least for the night. Bed is fine and hotel is quiet. Take a shower the next morning, and the water doesn’t get above lukewarm! I called the front desk, and he said he would look at it. Just as the water finally did heat up after about ten minutes, I heard the phone ring, assumingely him calling me back. When I did check out, he thinks it was because many people were showing at the same time and it strained the hot water system, and this has happened before. Not his fault. However, when I stay at an IHG property, I expect hot water right away. This isn’t a $50 budget motel. I paid around $100 for the night. They need to update their system. Restaurant was open for breakfast only that I’m aware of. Despite the sign stating the bar area was open until 10 nightly, it was dark when I came in from town around 9:30, meaning they either closed long ago or never opened. Yes it was a Wednesday night, but a snack and a drink would have been nice. Pool is outdoor only. Since it was a very cold late April with highs below 50 and lows around freezing, it obviously wasn’t open.

THE place to stay in Akron, Ohio.

The next time you need a place to spend a night or longer in Akron Ohio, don’t miss out on the opportunity to stay at Louis Berrodin’s B&B. On a recent bicycle ride from Columbus, Ohio to Cleveland, Ohio and back again, I spent two nights at Louie’s B&B. In all my years of traveling, I had never before stayed at a B&B and was a bit apprehensive and not sure what to expect. However, even before I arrived, Louie’s welcoming text messages began to make me suspect that I was in for a special treat. When I arrived Louie quickly proved to be a consummate host who had anticipated every possible need that any traveler might wish for during his or her stay overnight. I quickly felt right at home and thoroughly enjoyed my stays. I got twice the pleasure of staying at a hotel at half the price.

This is an older Courtyard, but the interiors have been updated. The rooms are adequate and some have small patios or balconies. The prize here though, is the customer service. Their staff are incredible. No matter what my need, from a better mattress to coffee in the wee hours, to so many thoughtful gestures, it made my head spin. I have rarely been in a hotel where the staff actually worked at making me feel welcome and so comfortable. Thanks to all the amazing people who helped me. From Stephanie and Emily who answered my every need, to Clinton whose smile and help brightened the beginning of each day. Brianna and Vickie are amazing at their jobs and Jackie and Ryan get kudos for making the place sparkling clean and well maintained. Truly, an incredible stay. Thanks again to all of you.

A Fair Hotel, But There's Work To Do

Reviewed By cromartie

The conversion of the United Building to a hotel is completed, and I was excited to spend the evening in Akron taking in the results. The rooms themselves are spacious. Amenities are above average and the conversion of 20s-30s era office space to a hotel looks interesting. The bathrooms are nicely arranged and the shower (shower only) is more than comfortable enough for persons of size and solid water pressure. The property is cost competitive with others in the area and, all things being equal, I'd rather give money to a local over a chain. The property feels upscale tactically, and the look is clean retro. Our room was exceptionally clean, and kudos to that aspect of the housekeeping staff's performance. This was likely the cleanest hotel room I've ever stayed in. That said, there are a number of issues. 1) Parking in the deck is not validated, and signage explaining to guests how to get from the deck to the hotel is not clear. Specifically, the deck has multiple lower levels, if you don't park on Level 1, specifically there is no signage helping you negotiate the walkways to get to the entrance of the hotel. 2) There are two check in parking spaces on Exchange Street. Invariably employees were parked in either one or both of them at various times. 3) There are multiple entrances to the hotel. You can only actually get in one. 4) Upon attempting to open the drawer between beds in my room, the drawer handle promptly came off in my hand. 5) Did you know they offered room service? There was a button on the phone but nothing anywhere in the room that indicated any sort of menu. Or indication of check out time, amenities, or any sort of information listed anywhere in the room that told me anything about the hotel at all. 6) Room to room noise insulation is good, however hallway noise is audible and there is no insulation whatsoever from outside noise, and traffic is constant, making it difficult for light sleepers. 7) But not as difficult as the beds, which are both as hard as a Hilton bed and overstuffed to boot. (Great pillows, though.) 8) You check in manually, and you check out manually. Not a problem for me personally, but those of you who expect electronic versions of both as timesavers will be bothered. 9) Did you know there's a Blu restaurant? And a jazz club (which is awesome)? I do, because I'm local, but if you're in from out of town you wouldn't, because the hotel doesn't cross promote, which strikes me as crazy, honestly. 10) The breakfast spread is sufficient for small groups but there would likely be serious problems with scale. An essential part of seating people for breakfast involves the distribution of napkins and silverware which were missing from every table on the morning of our stay. 11) Housekeeping knocking on the door prior to checkout with a DND sign out. This shouldn't happen. DND is DND. 12) Stairs. There are stairs leading into the lobby and stairs leading from the lobby to the elevators to ascend to your room. Though there are lifts for ADA compliance, having to haul luggage up and down even short sets of stairs for extended stays is bothersome. 13) The air conditioning unit broke three hours into our stay and would not restart. For a hotel open for less than two months, this really shouldn't happen (in the same way drawer handles shouldn't come off in your hand). About that breakfast. The pastries, all of them, are the single best collection of pastries I've ever had at a hotel, so kudos on their supplier. If I could have smuggled out more cinnamon rolls, I would have. What has been built in this space passes the eye test. There are aspects of this hotel, including room size, bathroom and amenities, I can't say enough good things about. The location and rate are, I think more than competitive. It's one thing to build something nice and another thing entirely to manage and sustain it. Ultimately, the test of a hotel room is how well you can sleep in it, and in that respect the Blu-Tique comes up short. If I could give a 2.5, I would, but I'll round up for now.
