Vibrant and packed with Victorian mansions, Costa Rica's rowdy, bustling capital was built on the profits of the coffee trade and working "golden bean" plantations still surround the city. Try freshly roasted local beans at Mercado Central. For shinier gold, visit the Museo del Oro. Many renovated landmarks now house stylish hotels. Usually viewed as a hub, rather than a destination, nightlife is concentrated in Spanish village-inspired El Pueblo. Don't miss the elegant 1897 National Theater.

Welcome to the first urban Selina, a hotspot for adventurers, working nomads, hipsters, and artists alike. The art, cuisine, nightlife, and spirit of this city will be an energizing, and enjoyable slap on the face full of nouveau Latin flavor. Stroll with Saturday shoppers through the San Jose farmers market, join the crowds in Parque La Sabana, dance the night away, or visit one of the many museums in Costa Rica’s cultural capital. Tucked away from the city hustle in the trendy historic district of Barrio Otoya is our stylish Urban office. This carefully designed space houses budding startups, freelancers and artists. Our office will allow you to get your work done, network and enjoy all the music, art and culture that has put Costa Rica on the international stage. Selina San Jose is located in Barrio Otoya, one of the oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods in the city. Features like Selina Home, The Playground, the tour office, and CoWork space add the perfect finishing touch. Stay in our dormitories, standard, deluxe, or private rooms. Suites and family rooms available. Start with a walking tour, stop for coffee, and find your new favorite outfit: in cosmopolitan San Jose, there’s a wealth of activities to choose from.
Check in is at 3pm, which is a bit late, made even worse by the fact that the rooms were delayed by more than an hour so ourselves and several other guests couldn’t check in before 4-4:30pm. There is little to nothing to do, just people waiting to get into their rooms. After getting our room, suddenly 2 other guests unlocked the door and came in, saying it was their room, while we laying in our room. Seems the hostel has sold the same room to 2 separate bookings. Super unprofessional and inconvenient as a customer to have your door unlocked from the outside and others coming in.

In the heart of the San Jose neighborhood, you will find the newly renovated Casa Aldea. Aldea means ‘village’ in Spanish — and that is what you will get when you stay here! This 100-year-old Victorian mansion will amaze you with its unique personality, where it combines vibrant history with modern living. The freshly upgraded rooms are great for solo travelers, couples, and friends to stay for a few nights or even a few weeks. Come to Casa Aldea to feel like a home away from home and meet new people from all over the world! We are located on Paseo Colón, a bustling street in the heart of San Jose. With a safe, central location, we attract travelers for many reasons, such as medical tourism, conferences/business, concerts, theatre, and convenient travel to any of Costa Rica’s beautiful beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and other nature reserves. In total, we have 4 new upgraded rooms that come with a private bathroom and TV. If you have a car, we have free parking in the back. Pura Vida!
I’ve been living in Costa Rica on the coast for 18 years now and for the past five years when I go to San Jose I stay at Hostel Aldea. I find that it is extremely comfortable and the staff is super friendly. It’s like staying at home. The restaurant is also excellent. I recommend this place for backpackers and for people who are looking for a nice quiet and comfortable stay.

Upon arrival, I noticed how calm the hostel was which was perfect for someone who had a long trip the following day. The staff is also super helpful and makes sure to walk around on a regular basis. Plus, the place is super clean and spacious!

This family hotel/hotel has people that are so hospitable and friendly, they make you wish you were a better person yourself! I arrived late and left early, but they were trying to figure out ways to make me feel comfortable and welcome! Even if that meant making me an unexpected breakfast at 6:15 when my shuttle bus was delayed!

When we arrived For check in we were taken to another hotel around the corner from the stray cat - I’m not actually sure If this is even legal to put someone up in a different hotel to the one that was booked??? We were checked into a room that adjoins the downstairs public area. Every time the doorbell went or someone came into or out of the hotel you heard it. The noise was absolutely awful. If we hadn’t of just arrived after a long flight I would have moved to another hotel. The reason we stayed is because it was so convenient to get transport from 7/10 bus terminal for onward connection. Location is pretty rough! That said, the staff were very, very helpful and the breakfast was just what we needed before our joinery (toast, cereal, tea and coffee).

Costa Rica Backpackers is the first hostel in the country. We are independent and locally run, and as such ou will get the personal touch not found in big chain hostels. We opened our doors in 2001, and have been the number one meeting spot in the capital ever since. Come and hang out with travelers from all over the world! Swaying palms, smooth tunes, free breakfast, kitchen facilities, WiFi, swinging hammocks, that's the Costa Rica Backpackers way! Think global, stay local
Incredibly rude staff, perhaps they’re trying to employ rude people. Has a bar and restaurant which is good but only when they’re open. Kitchen too small. Cant get delivery’s of food. Cant smoke or bring your own beer. Power cuts and no wifi!!

Our hostel is a small and colorful option where you can rest pleasantly, having all the necessary amenities for it, while being captivated by the various murals and artistic pieces that can be observed in the hostel. By the way our hostel has a cafeteria for Lovers of a good coffee. One of the characteristics that stand out to us would be to be in a quiet and safe area in the city where after walking a short distance you will have access to the main tourist attractions that you can appreciate or enjoy the city of San José, it should be noted that we are very close to supermarkets and bars and restaurant as well as shopping centers.
The breakfast is very generous and very healthy and tasty and made to order with the owner who is very attentive. She is super helpful. The architecture is very interesting in its use of height, sight, and light to make a space appear long and large, along with mirrors for the same purpose. (The daughter is a very creative architect!) It is worth visiting even for that reason alone, the same with the decorations that make you feel that you are in a green place, in the jungle. It truly is an education in interior design. The other guests were very interesting from different parts of the world; also very nice. The mother and daughter help you in your plans whether its finding your way around or fixing your phone with a new Sim card.

One of the bestsellers in San José! Lost In Costa Rica is located in San José, 2.9 km from Costa Rica's National Theater. Our Eco Hostel has private and shared rooms. Large areas of shared use such as Games Room with Pool table, darts, chess and more, Deck, Garden, Dining room, Kitchen. We have free private parking, 24-hour service and security and WIFI in all rooms. We offer currency exchange and free tourist information service. A unique place to have a good time, in the center of the country with the possibility of recovering every corner of Pura Vida. The La Sabana metropolitan park is 5 km from the Lost In Costa Rica, while the Costa Rica National Stadium is 6 km away. Tobías Bolaños International Airport is the closest and is 11 km away.
Fully recommended! The genuine kindness of the staff is one of the highlights of this place, they immediately make you feel at home. The hostal is located in the safest and best neighborhood of San Jose (San Pedro) with nice restaurants around. The rooms are super clean, we stayed in a private room it was great but they also have dorms. There is a big kitchen and different common spaces to chill out. The internet connection works great, this was useful as I needed to do some work. We had an amazing time and it is now our go-to place whenever we need to travel to San Jose! Something important that I want to mention is the power we have as clients to vote with our buying decisions... what I can say is that they are serious about caring for our planet. They have interesting initiatives so it is nice to know you are supporting a local project with a heart-centered approach. Lastly likes attracts likes so the guests staying there were also amazing and aligned with the vibe of the hostel. I can't recommend it enough!!
