This was my second experience with Stay Liuqiu. I visited several months prior to get my Open Water Scuba Diving license and had an excellent experience. The guides were extremely accommodating and were able to translate all of the training into English for me (since my Chinese is very limited). This time, I stayed in the hostel in addition to taking the Advanced Open Water course. I found all the staff to be very welcoming and helpful. They helped me book my ferry, rent a scooter, and even took me to the hospital when I had a minor allergic reaction. As for the lodging itself, I found it very comfortable and convenient. My room was spacious and clean with lockers and privacy curtains that encircled each bed . There's also a water machine downstairs to save you from taking late night runs to 7-11, and ample scooter parking outside. Definitely recommend and will come back in the future!

I stayed here for two days, in a superior room (B01). The room itself was clean, but just a little dated. The outdoor bathtub is nice, and I made good use of it. The room includes a small walled-in garden that could look a lot better if some effort went into it - it was just a few pebbles, and a stunted tree. You'll need a Taiwanese plug here, they don't have those multi-slot plugs other Taiwanese hotels have. Staff was generally friendly and very helpful. Most reception staff spoke English. Since I was among the only guests, I could order breakfast for a specific time (included in the rate). It's the usual Asian fare plus toast. The restaurant was not open. The pool is nice, but also a little dated and very shallow for Westerners. Half of it, including the deck, is in the shade, because the building where the standard rooms are is built over it. Pool hours unfortunately are only from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. There is a very nice picknick area opposite the pool where they also have barbecues in the high season. The hotel is located a little out of the way, about half-way down the island from the main town Baisha - a 2.5 km, or 30-minute walk uphill away. It's closer to the east coast sights, such as the Black Devil Cave, the Mountain Pig Ditch and the Shanfu Ecological Corridor, but you'll have to trek into town for restaurants. It's also a 30-minute uphill walk from both ferry terminals, so e-mail ahead to be met at the terminal if you have a lot of luggage. It's normally 150 NT$, I believe, but if you ask nicely, they might drive you for free on your way back. It's rather expensive for what's on offer, but prices on Xiao Liuqiu are rather high compared to the mainland (4200 NT$ for a superior room in the off-season). Shanban Bay Inn certainly is a solid option. Be careful, on the weekends, this place gets swamped with groups from the Taiwanese mainland, and prices rise accordingly.
