The elaborate interior of this former presidential palace houses paintings and sculptures by famous Guatemalan artists.
We Just invited to this special building made in 1944 i think. The ceremony was nice and we were with the president of the country. This place was made from a special kind of rock, green colored. The rooms are wonderful and the paintings and everything are splendid. Today is a musuem too, a place to visit in This beautiful country.

The National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is a public institution and is part of the Directorate General of Cultural and Natural Heritage. Protects and disseminates the most important collection of archaeological artifacts of Mayan Culture, as well as a collection of ethnological material showing the cultural diversity of Guatemalan society. The permanent exhibition occupies 3500 square meters including pieces of jades, pottery, textiles and masks. Two rooms for temporary exhibitions present general topics of Mayan Culture and Guatemalan Archaeology.
The museum is organized into pre classic, classic and post classic exhibits of the Mayan civilizations. It is a good way to get background before going to the actual ruins.

In 1538, the first Dominican friars of the "Orden de Predicadores de Santo Domingo de Guzmán" arrived in the "Capitanía General de Guatemala", establishing the "Iglesia y Convento de Santo Domingo". It was one of the most important Roman Catholic convents of the Americas in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The baroque two-towered building with fantastic ten bells, filled with rich objects and holy relics, was destroyed by the earthquakes of 1773. Its ruins remained abandoned for many years. Centuries later, they were somehow restored and house, today, an awesome complex of museums. Through the ancient walls, brick archways, old crypts and tile corridors, the treasures of "Casa Santo Domingo" are on display: pre-Columbian Mayan art, ceramics, religious objects, silver and glass wares, old pharmacy articles ... plus paintings, sculptures, colonial furniture and archaelogical findings. Art and history. Unmissable! Enjoy!

We went here since it was close to where we are staying, not expecting anything great based on other reviews. It was better than we expected. It has two distinct museums, one on coffee production and the other on Mayan culture, centered around music. Both museums are worthwhile to visit. There are guided tours, but you can also wander through at your own pace, as they have plenty of descriptions in both Spanish & English. We were able to tag along on an English tour through the music museum but did a self guided tour through the coffee museum as there was only a Spanish tour being offered while we were there. It was very quiet while we were there on a Wednesday morning & early afternoon. The grounds around the buildings are quite pleasant to walk through. Price for each museum is 35Q but they offer both for 60Q. The visit concludes with a small cup of coffee at the gift shop.

This museum is tiny, but it's worth the visit if you're interested in artifacts from the Lake Atitlan area.
