Museu da Inconfidencia

This museum of Brazilian history at Praca Tiradentes was at one time a prison.

Reviewed By marcosf293 - Brasilia, Brazil

Museum to think about the Brazilian colonial period, the dominant presence of the Portuguese crown during the gold cycle, and the reactions of sectors of society to the taxes that were charged. The museum discusses customs of the time, the evolution of constructions, artifacts used in mining, the lifestyle, and is dedicated to the thinkers of "Inconfidência Mineira". This movement was formed by representatives of the economic elite of the time, dissatisfied with taxes, who met and talked about libertarian ideals. The rupture with the crown did not happen, since they were denounced as conspirators. Joaquim Silvério dos Reis denounced them, he was a miner who had tax debts, and bargained his debt in exchange for the denunciation of libertarians. Then, after three years of investigation, ten libertarians were sentenced to death, but only one was actually executed: Joaquim José da Silva Xavier ("Tiradentes": the dentist). It is believed that Tiradentes was executed because he was not from a wealthy family, had no education (he was an amateur dentist, merchant, and lieutenants of the imperial cavalry), and also because he assumed his libertarian ideals in interrogations, so he was considered the leader. The rest were expelled to Africa, where they died, and their remains were repatriated in the 1940s. This place arouses many emotions.

Memorial JK

Many visit the site of President Kubitschek’s memorial, featuring a tastefully inscribed plaque in honor of the beloved leader.

Reviewed By saronic - Zurich, Switzerland

One of the most interesting sights in a city full of architectural wonders is the Memorial JK. I took a taxi to get here from the hotel area and then went for a long walk back, past several other interesting places. Considered as the president, who achieved the most of all for his country, Joscelino Kubitschek (often just known as 'JK') is also seen by many as the 'father of modern Brazil'. Not the least he stands behind the foundation of the new capital, Brasilia. Trained as a medical doctor this man from Minas Gerais, who as his family name betrays is a descendant - from his mother's side - of Czech immigrants, very soon started a successful political career. After he was killed at a car accident in 1976 soon later a mausoleum-memorial was built in his honour - with Oscar Niemeyer as the architect. Besides the tomb in a crypt with special light effect can be seen rooms with various personal items of his and of his wife Sarah like furniture, books, dresses, letters and many photos showing him with people like JFK, Marlon Brando, Fidel Castro, André Malraux and many many others. It all gives an insight into the man's life and also of his period in general.

Parque Aldeia do Imigrante

The Park is the most prominent tourist attraction in the city. It was created to rescue and preserve the historic past of the immigrants who settled this region, predominantly German immigration. The park is divided into two spaces, the first being the Bavarian Village and according to the Historical Village, where we find a representation of the history of the first immigrants shaped Living Museum.

Parque Aldeia do Imigrante is a tribute to the brave, perseverant German immigrants who settled in this faraway land almost 200 years ago. The park not only keeps the German spirit alive, but serves as an encapsulated sample of German culture in Brazil. The entrance to the park fronts on Hwy RS-235 in the town of Nova Petropolis. The park is an easy 1 1/2 - 2 hour ride from Porto Alegre. My wife and I toured the park towards the end of the day. Unfortunately, our time was compressed, and we were not able to see all that this wonderful park has to offer. Parque Aldeia is perfect blend of nature, culture and history. Upon entering, we followed the sound of a live traditional German band playing under the shelter of an outdoor pavillion and outdoor cafe. Various German Brazilian couples were out on the dance floor enjoying themselves. As much as we would have enjoyed spending time with this lively crowd, we pressed on to see as much of the park as we could before it closed. Further on the trail, my wife and I descended to an idyllic lake with swan-shaped pedal boats. We continued up a trail to the old German village... which is comprised of various buildings "borrowed" from various small towns throughout the "Romantic Route."... including a church, school, bank and various other structures. I was surprised to see a model of the famous Wartburg (where Luther translated the Bible into German). My only regret is that we did not have time to enjoy all that Parque Aldeia has to offer. But, we are coming back soon to spend a couple of weeks in the Nova Petropolis area. A picnic at the park is on our agenda. The park is operated and maintained by the muncipal government. Entrance is a modest 18 Reales. One word of warning, though. Make sure you keep an eye on your metered parking, The attendants are quick on the draw. My wife and I parked about a block away from the park, but the municipal parking fee machine was another 100 yards away. We purchased time, but when we returned with our paid ticket, a notice of violation was stuck under the wiper. I managed to convince the young man that I had no intention of being a scofflaw and showed him my paid parking ticket.

Worth visit! There is a small ticket price for a big experience! Things are all original, there is almost no replicas, so you see the true things. The view to the lower city and ocean from this place is amazing. Also, you can see the City's elevator and the Model Market. If you want to spend some time indoor to avoid the hot outside, this is the right place! You will only spend between 40mins to 1 hour in this place, but its a good one. There is English, Spanish and Portuguese tour guides included in the entrance ticket fee.
