10 Historical & Heritage Tours in Mumbai That You Shouldn't Miss

September 28, 2021 Jacquiline Darosa

Though Mumbai can feel chaotic and crowded, there are peaceful moments to be found here. Nibble a paper cone of bhelpuri while you stroll the sands of Chowpatty Beach. Then, take a short walk to Mani Bhavan, where Mahatma Gandhi once lived, strategized, and was ultimately arrested. The markets are spirited places to bargain for spices or souvenirs. Take a guided tour of Dharavi – made famous by "Slumdog Millionaire" – for an eye-opening glimpse into what Mumbai life is like for nearly a million people.

Peaceful palm-lined streets, unspoiled beach, and pervasive Portuguese heritage make the town of Vasai. Vasai is located in the northern outskirts of Mumbai, surprisingly reminiscent of Goa. You'd never guess but Vasai was once of more importance than Mumbai. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was a headquarters of Portuguese rule with a thriving fort city. Nowadays, it's a cool oasis that feels blissfully stuck in a time warp. On this tour you will see a contrasting side to Mumbai, from Old churches to fishing colonies to a local home-made food to a 5 time world UNESCO awardee wood carver.

We were on a long awaited holiday to Mumbai with our 12 year old son few months back. One of the main reasons we wanted to visit Mumbai was to do the Bollywood Tour and hopefully with luck on our side, meet our favourite actors and actresses. We were very lucky to find Mr. Rahil Khan through the excellent reviews of his company on Tripadvisor. We were not disappointed at all. When Mr. Rahil heard that how eager my wife and son were to meet the actors, within a short notice of few hours he organised the visit to the Studio for us. We could not believe that how easily Mr. Rahil got access for us to meet all the actors and actresses who all seemed to be good friends with him. (We later got to know that Mr. Rahil Khan is an actor and director himself). All the stars were very nice and were very happy to meet us and they agreed to take plenty of pictures with our family. This was the highlight and once in a lifetime experience for us which we will never forget. My son and wife were overjoyed. We also got to see live filming of a television show and web series, which was a very thrilling experience. The sound recording room and live dance show were great fun and very enjoyable. We were well looked after by WOB team who work in a dedicated and sincere manner to make sure that you have a great enjoyable day. We highly recommend the Bollywood Tour with Mr. Rahil Khan and his team. It is more than value for money. Thank you. Manish Sehgal.

Bandra became a part of Mumbai only in 1950. Prior to that, it was a separate municipality, and before that, till the mid-19th century, a separate island. In the 16th century, the North Konkan coast came under the control of the Portuguese and Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries began to forcibly convert the population to Christianity. When the Portuguese handed over the seven islands of Bombay to the British, Bandra was not part of the deal. And so, Bandra has a slightly different history from Bombay, and that has a part to play in Bandra retaining its Indo-Portuguese Roman Catholic character in spite of wide-scale development. On our #BandraBreeze open-jeep heritage tour, we breeze through five centuries of Bandra’s history in a two-hour ride.

During lockdown times it was a pleasure to be part of a virtual tour of horniman circle and around. Though i have walked that area so many times i enjoyed listening to the stories and people behind all the buildings there. The host Farokh Jijina was very crisp and clear in his presentation. Brought back memories of the times i worked in that area but also sometines made me wish i was born a 150 years earlier to enjoy these buildings in their heydays.

NFPs walking tours are a great way to explore Mumbai as an insider. I did the Horniman Circle tour(Bombay Zero) on a Sunday Morning, at first I was a little hesitant as the tour started at 8:30 am but after completing the tour I realised it was so worth it! Totally felt like I travelled back-in time and experienced “Bombay”- in all its past glory. A special mention should go to Aditya who provided live commentary on the tour, really enjoyed his enthusiasm!
