10 Historical & Heritage Tours in Copenhagen That You Shouldn't Miss

November 13, 2021 Frederic Celentano

Copenhagen was once a Viking fishing settlement, and you can still find traces of the Norse explorers here. Visit reconstructed villages, the remains of a 1,000-year-old castle, and museums dedicated to the notorious raiders. Copenhagen also features a blend of modern architecture and historical artifacts such as the Round Tower observatory – a wonderful example of 17th-century architecture. Art galleries, narrow streets, canals, parks, and Baroque churches round out the city’s cultural attractions.

We were happy to have Nadia as a guide, who was absolutely nice and welcoming. It really just felt like walking around with a friend who is truly passionate about Danish culture herself and together enjoying the beautiful places we were seeing. This tour option turned out perfect for the corona time when everything is closed because, even though you cannot enter the castles or the library or anything, there is a person who can describe it to you in a comprehensive and captivating way. And we ate it all! Seraina was very knowledgeable about the area. Showed us a great variety of Danish foods and when we went to get our Danish hotdogs and everything closed she did everything she could to make sure we had our hotdog in whatever form we could find. Great conversation and lot of fun. Hope to see her again.

Having said that we booked the "Group Option", there was only myself and my wife on the bus, so we had our guide Svend all to ourselves. Collection was from our hotel in a smart 16 seater minibus and we set off to Roskilde for visits to the Cathedral (where all the Kings & Queens are buried) and then to the Viking Ship museum. We particularly enjoyed the ship museum and if you are planning a private tour would suggest you make sure enough time is spent here. Then it is off to Hillerod and after lunch in the town a walk around Fredriksborg Castle. - If you want to see all the castle and walk round the gardens you need to get a move on. Your guide will almost certainly recommend you include the Castle Chapel on your tour. Back on the bus and off to the final stop at Kronborg Castle in Helsingborg. An interesting tour round the inside with a mock performance of part of Hamlet, followed by a walk onto the ramparts with views of Sweden. It's a lot to fit into a single day and your guide does have to keep you moving, so you don't always get as long as you want at each location.
