10 Historic Walking Areas in Florida That You Shouldn't Miss

April 14, 2022 Leonarda Pillsbury

Not just for retirees and theme park enthusiasts, the Sunshine State offers beautiful beaches, pristine diving conditions, and sizzling nightlife. Salsa the night away in a smokin’ hot Miami club, or swing away at one of Kissimmee’s many premium golf courses. An airboat tour of the Everglades is an unforgettable adventure – just look out for alligators! For the risk-averse, a lazy day spent on the soft sands of an Emerald Coast beach is as rejuvenating as a spa treatment.

North Shore Historic District

Reviewed By 863cindys - St. Petersburg, United States

Walking through this beautiful historic district will expose you to lovely homes and beautiful tropical landscaping. However do not miss the water front. Here you will find a large park to stroll or run along plus public tennis courts and a small beach. But my favorite is the North shore Aquatic Complex at Northshore Drive and 10th Ave.NE. There are three pools: first is a large pool that is divided into lap lanes along with diving boards and a general swim area..next is a smaller lap pool and finally a children's pool with great slides and water guns. It is a beautifully clean pool and very peaceful. Beats a hotel pool any day.

Artisans' Guild Gallery

One of the longest-running artists' co-ops in the United States with a gallery full of handmade works that include diverse media and forms. Featuring all local artists at a beautifully restored vintage home in the heart of downtown Gainesville!

Reviewed By IntDesigner13

Every time I have visited the Artisan’s Guild, there has been so much beautiful stuff to see! From pottery, to jewelry, to clothing; woodworking, glasswork, paintings ... the list goes on. What was always expected to be a quick trip would usually wind up being over an hour just because of everything there was to look at. The old location was nice just because of its central location to downtown Gainesville, but it always seemed a bit cramped, and I was definitely always a little extra nervous going in when I had my kids with me. The new location is wonderful because the setting seems much more appropriate for an artisan’s guild. There is more room to walk around, and everyone did a wonderful job of laying out the displays and making their new setting an improvement of the old. Not only is a visit here well worth the unique pieces you will find, but it’s like visiting an art gallery where you can actually leave with some of the art! Well worth a visit!

Brownie the Town Dog Grave and Memorial

Reviewed By 738eddiej

Brownie the Town Dog of Daytona Beach died in 1954, but he remains a beloved part of Daytona Beach history. Brownie was a stray dog who the city of Daytona Beach fell in love with. He was written about in national publications, became a popular tourist attraction, had his own bank account and when he died had a huge funeral and his eulogy was given by the mayor. Today, you can visit his grave and memorial. It's a wonderful site to reflect on the role our pets play in our lives and an interesting glimpse into the history of Daytona Beach's downtown. While there visit the Halifax Historical Museum (this is housed in the Bank building that housed Brownie's bank account in the 40s and 50s), and all the historic shops on Beach Street.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Bayfront sanctuaries connecting people with air plants of the world, native nature, and our regional history.

Reviewed By PatH840 - Asheboro, United States

We spent a delightful morning in the beautiful Marie Selby Botanical Gardens during a recent visit to Sarasota. Our stroll through the garden began with a fascinating display of epiphytes, which we learned are plants that grow on other plants without harming them. Some favorite epiphytes were the orchids and bromeliads. The fern garden was a place of tranquility, filled with quite an extensive variety of ferns. The koi pond was very popular with visitors. We really enjoyed watching these fascinating fish in their lovely surroundings. During our stroll we discovered absolutely gorgeous views of Sarasota Bay, requiring time to take in the perfect blue sky, shimmering water and the colorful boats - what a treat! Our favorite part was the native butterfly garden. We saw many colorful butterflies, including numerous Monarch butterflies. We learned that these local Monarchs remain all year long and do not participate in the well-known Monarch migration. Who could blame them for remaining in this fantastic place? We loved our visit to Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Sarasota area.

Coquina Baywalk

A small nature park on Anna Maria Island perfect for relaxing walks.

Reviewed By loisrebeccam

My husband and I felt very safe at the coquina beach bay walk today. I forgot to take my camera, so we will have to go back to capture the magic! I look forward to taking my grandchildren and sharing the very impressive educational signage! The walks through the mangroves was absolutely magical. We were there at low tide so we could see the mangrove roots with barnacles on them. The filtering power of their root system was quite visible! Do not miss this hidden gem!
