Velika Mrdakovica - Arauzona

According to the finds and its position, some identify Velika Mrdakovica with Arauzona, a Liburnian settlement described by Plinius in his travelogues. Judging by the rich finds of metal buckles and jewellery, old money and fragments of glass and ceramics, it is quite safe to say so.

The Cathedral of St James in Sibenik

Reviewed By carolas936 - Marietta, United States

The Cathedral of St James in Sibenik is a superb example of Gothic-Renaissance architecture, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. The building was begun 1431 and later supervised by Dalmatian master-builder Juraj Dalmatinac, in the Gothic Flamboyant style. Of particular note is his exterior frieze of 71 sculpted life-sized heads, each unique. From 1473 construction was under Nikola Firentinac in Tuscan Renaissance style, completed in 1536. The western facade has a Gothic portal framed by carved saints and surmounted by two rose windows. The Lions' Portal in the north facade features carvings of Adam and Eve and the apostles Peter and Paul, with bronze reliefs of scenes from the Old Testament. The interior is as magnificent as the exterior: the three-aisled nave has a double row of columns with Gothic capitals and arches, with a decorative frieze above and an outstanding gallery balustrade. High above the nave rose windows in an intricate shell and floral design are superb. The main alter is richly decorated and lit from a half-domed apse. Side altars are Baroque dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The baptistery under the south apse contains exquisitely carved ceiling and font supported by three angels by Dalmatinac in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Brochures in several language describe the many artworks and architectural features inside the church. The cathedral is open from 9.30am-6.30pm, with an entry fee of 20 kuna (children free).

Visovac Monastery

Visovac is a little island owned by the Catholic Church, situated in the area of the lower flow of the river Krka between two waterfalls in Krka National Park - the Roski waterfall and Skradinski buk. Prior to human habitation of the island, it was only a "White rock" in the middle of the lake. It got today's shape thanks to the work of the priests that brought the land to the shallow water and separated it from the water with a wall, so the island with its vegetation became a "little paradise".

Got local bus from Vodice, approx 15 minutes. Walked along the beautiful harbour/quayside, packed with restaurants and then ventured into the historic winding stone alleyways and houses as we climbed the steeped walk to the fortress. Cafe at top and took in the magnificent views. Steeped on history and well worth a visit.

It's a bit of a trek up to the top of the fortress, but worth it. We went to The Stranglers gig and it was brilliant. The seating is tiered and we were sat on the front row literally two metres away from them. The fortress itself is stunning with views over the sea. The bar behind the seating area is super modern and you can see out of the bar to the stage as it's all glass. Staff were helpful.....the only drawback was there was only a few ladies cubicles open in the toilets....one section had been blocked off, give the amount of people at the concert (approx 2000) it wasn't very good, I queued for a while but gave up in the end.
