Kazan Kremlin

The historic fortress dating back to the 16th to 19th centuries.

Reviewed By 30vladimirr - Moscow, Russia

Kazan Kremlin, an amazing historical place, on the banks of the Volga River. the walls and towers of the Kremlin are very well preserved. The Kremlin itself in architecture is very similar to the Pskov Kremlin. Also white towers and walls, also round towers. I liked the building very much. It was in winter, a cold wind was blowing from the river, it was -23 Celsius, snow was falling, so we moved from museum to museum. On the territory of the Kremlin, there is a museum of the history of this break off and the emergence of the Kazan Khanate in the beginning, and so on. I recommend to visit those who are fond of history, like me).

The Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra

The Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra “In the land of Moscow and all over the world there is no other monastery equal to this one…” - Archdeacon Paul of Aleppa

One of the highlights of our trip to Russia, (my wife’s and myself, her sister, and my brother in law) was without any doubt our trip to the Golden Ring and especially to The Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra church in the city of Sergiev Posad which is considered to be one of the most important religious centers in Russia and a pilgrimage site especially to believers in Orthodox Christianity. Since we arrived with our “private” guide who had “pre-arranged” personal guidance for us, so we “got” a young guide from the church staff who took us under his wings and led us to all the interesting places (and they are many) throughout the site. Explained to us the history of the place from its inception to the present day. Starting from the entrance area with the arched door and the amazing frescoes on the walls and ceiling and later all the spectacular sites (and they are many). In conclusion a most amazing place NOT 2 B MISSED.

The Ruins of the Mill Named after Grudinin// Gergardt

The steam powered mill was built in 1903. It was equiped with electrical generator and boiler station. There was a railway from the mill to the hithe, that was demounted after the war. The owner of the mill was Aleksander Gergardt, an ethnic German. His name is inscripted on the wall. In the 1930-s the mill was named after Grudinin, in honour of the lathe operator K. Grudinin who was killed because of his communistic activity. During the Stalingrad battle the observation point of I. P. Elin, the commander of the 42nd regiment of the 13th Rifle Division, was situated here. The mill, the house of Pavlov and the house of Zabolotniy were the main defensive posts in the centre of Stalingrad. The ruined mill is an evidence of the violent fighting and the last-ditch heroism of the Stalingrad defenders. The ruins of the mill is a historical and cultural monument of the federal significance. The total area is 989,3 square metres.

Fort XI Donhoff

Fort XI Donhoff is the fortified structure built in 1877-1882. It is one of 12 forts composing the outer fortification ring of former Fortress Koenigsberg previously called "Night feather-bed of Konigsberg". In the end of the Second World War on April 7, 1945 the garrison located in Fort XI capitulated practically without fight. On this reason it is the most undisturbed and well-preserved fort among other Kaliningrad forts. Nowadays guests visiting Fort XI Donhoff have possibility to touch pure history and see with their own eyes the part of Koenigsberg defensive system that existed before 1945. There are such interesting exhibits and objects as original German gate, iron spiral staircases, barracks corridors, an observation post, the operating lifting mechanism for a raising of ammunition, etc. Now it is under the management of a private company that preserves its identity and develops the fort as a museum, touristic, cultural and artisan center.

Varyazhsky Dvor means Viking's Yard in Russian but it actually has another - and by far simpler a name - Svargas which is translated from Indo-European as Sunny Sky. This is a purely private project which is sixteen years old. Their life has been tough - constant fight with local red tape and corruption, volatile cash-flow and even a direct arson attack from hostile competitors. They were burnt virtually to ashes (!!!) and reconstructed the whole thing with their own hands! (One can still see charred walls on the second (English - first) floor. To understand what goes on there please read a review by the guy from Vermont. I'd only add that you can also try a smashing old-style lunch there - Vikings' cabbage or pea (no rubbish cream!) soup and home-made ham hock (Haxe, Eisbein) with potatoes. But - attention! - this service is oursourced so please get in touch with the complex in advance and bear in mind that if the guys are missing there'll be absolutely no opportunity to even have a snack there. So mind it in the course of your planning. But if they ARE there then first thing to do upon arrival should be approaching them and making an order. Then go to their smithy, throw axes, shoot a bow, try chainmail and other medieval haute couture stuff, etc. 'coz in an hour the meals will be ready and you won't have to wait. Their parking is rather modest and this should be taken into account as well. And toilets... Mind-blowing smell. Get ready for a simple obsolete outhouse. Very disappointing. Apart from this - magnificent and very interesting. Recommended!
