Cape Town glistens at the southern toe of the African continent. Tourist brochure-views at Blaauwberg Beach and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens are within easy driving distance of "The Mother City." The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve provides sweeping sea vistas, hiking trails and wildlife encounters. On a more somber note, travelers can visit Robben Island, the prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years.

Figuring prominently in the storied history of Cape Town, this carefully preserved Presidential residence was furnished and decorated by imperialist Cecil Rhodes.
It isn't easy getting a spot on this tour, but with a little luck and persistence you can do it. Contact Najwaa (she's the tour guide) at [email protected]. This is a very interesting 2-hour tour that takes place in a beautiful old residence that once belonged to Cecil John Rhodes.

this is a great location, the town hall is splendid, by the side of a very large open square, the statue of Mandela brings you back to a very great moving speech

This house museum is furnished as a home for a well-to-do Cape family during the late 18th Century. It houses some of the best pieces of Cape furniture and silver in the country, in addition to a priceless collection of ceramics.

During the apartheid years Robben Island served as a prison for political activists.
Fantastic experience - great guide taking us through the history of SA apartheid and an ex prisoner guiding us to Mandela's former cell with an abundance of historical information....felt humbled to 'walk the long road to freedom' at the end of the tour.

The Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town and was previously known as the South African Cultural History Museum. The lower level of this museum explores the long history of slavery in South Africa. Through changing, temporary exhibitions the museum addresses issues around and raises awareness of human rights. The upper level galleries as well as other spaces in the museum will be renewed in the coming years and currently showcases some highlights from the museums ceramics, silverware and Egyptology collections.
This is an unknown gem of history that visitors should know about Because of the history of apartheid in South Africa, people tend to forget about the history before it.This was recommended to me by someone as I was leaving the Crypt Jazz Club the night before my visit. This dealt with the history of slavery in South Africa, but it also show s the resistance to slavery and apartheid. It also has exhibits of present day problems such as domestic violence. This should be included in any trip to Cape Town.
