The Tōhoku region (東北地方, Tōhoku-chihō), Northeast region, or Northeast Japan consists of the northeastern portion of Honshu, the largest island of Japan. This traditional region consists of six prefectures (ken): Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi and Yamagata.

Shimo-Ike is a beautiful lake where you can enjoy pleasant walk of 10km around it. It has been inscribed as a registered wetlands under the Ramsar Convention. There is a cozy community house called "Hotoria" nearby. Shimo-Ike is paired with Kami-Ike, both located in the small town of Oyama, known as Sake winery town, in Tsuruoka-shi, Yamagata Pref.
