New York State has it all – booming metropolises, majestic waterfalls, mountains, wine country, chicken wings. Yes, NYC is a magnet for tourists, but an exploration of the rest of the state can be equally thrilling. The Finger Lakes Wine Region is a vision of serene waters, quaint B&Bs, and pretty vineyards. Movie buffs will love Rochester, home of the George Eastman House and one of the world’s most comprehensive film archives. On your way to Niagara Falls, stop in Buffalo to fuel up on spicy wings.

Pawling Appalachian Trail

Reviewed By christenthial

Started at the railroad trailhead in Pawling and ended at Old Route 55. Approximately 7 miles. Beautiful hiking. Some snow, some mud, some swamp. Spotted one deer, many squirrels, a woodpecker, many varieties of other birds and a furry black thing with a tail that was as long and fluffy as its body (maybe a skunk or a badger -!dunno). At Cat Rocks lookout it was too misty to see anything but still pretty. Nuclear Lake was also enchanting. Overall a Beautiful trek! Recommended enthusiastically

The rail trail is a great place to take the family! Walking, or biking, it's a great place to get your exercise, meet friendly faces, and enjoy the scenery, especially when going over the former rail road bridge that crosses the Hudson River. There are spectacular views from the bridge in all seasons.

Van Cortlandt Park

Van Cortlandt Parkis the third largest New York City Park with 1,146 acres. Over half of the Park is forested and it has the largest freshwater lake in the borough. There is a lot of history in the Park: - It contains the Bronx's oldest building, the Van Cortlandt House built in 1748-49. The Park has the oldest municipal golf course in the United States, the Van Cortlandt Golf Course, founded in 1895. -It has a National Historic Landmark trail, the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, which travels the route of the city's original water tunnel. Inside VCP is a cross-country running course with a national reputation. Every year, the rugged course hosts the national cross-country championships as well as the Manhattan College Invitational for high school students throughout the U.S.

Devil's Hole State Park

09/06/2020. My continued pandemic hikes around the region lead us to Devil’ Hole State Park. The day was great, sunny and about 70 degrees. The trail is extensive and to say the least not boring. Most of it is tree covered so you will not have a hot sun beating down on you during your hike. I would definitely wear hike boots if you have some and bring some water to drink. The trail has numerous steps, up and down my iPhone tracked us at 30 flights and about 5 miles round trip. You can definitely spend less time than that if you so desire. I would start you trip on the North side of the trail facing the Power Generating plant. Take the steps down and hike southward along the gorge and the rushing rapids as you hear the sounds of the mighty Niagara River. One can continue on until you get to the bottom of the whirlpool gorge where you can sit along the shoreline as the rushing water goes by you. Overhead you can see the Aero car taking sightseers across the whirlpool gorge. Make your way back using the whirlpool steps and take the upper trail back to your car in the parking lot.

Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails

Reviewed By lsg08091964

Didn't get to wander the entire area, but what I did see here of the trails was lovely. There are some rocks and tree roots sticking out of the ground, so anyone who is elderly or does not have stable footing will have to watch their step, but I found the trails to be over-all, pretty easy and for any age level. This is one of the very few ways you can see Lake Placid itself via public access as the lake shore trail goes right up to it. Maps are available at the trail head, and be sure to sign the register so the folks who monitor this land area can help to keep it open to the public, and keep it out of the hands of land developers and private interests. Dogs are welcome, but PLEASE clean up after them. Poop is a pain to get out of the grooves on hiking boots. A beautiful place to bond with nature for any hiker level.Planning to come back and spend an entire day next time I visit.
