My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day walk through the Kiso valley on the Nakasendo trail. Mac's Adventures( in partnership with Oku) was the company we used and everything - accommodation, food, walking notes and country and village scenery - was above expectation.Would recommend this walk to those who like to walk on trails that are not busy ( only the first day to Tsumago had quite a few walkers) and have an interest in Japanese culture.

Beautiful cedar forests with some nice, well maintained trails, and a few trees to be found (with relatively easy access) that are over 2000 years old. Stunning all around, with trees and waterfalls and crystal clear streams.

You can walk,up and down the pass, by the seashore, beautiful cliffs and wooded area. Also, suspension bridges, over the coast, observing Ohshima - in Japanese, means a big island - and a nice light-house that enables you to view mountain side of the area, including Mount Omuro.. Very nice and comforting to roam, looking at the ocean out there and listening to the birds.

Walk from Tenri Station to Sakurai Station. Some people make Miwa station a departure and arrival station. Walk through a variety of landscapes such as shrines, temples, burial mounds, village sites, fields, traditional streets. The altitude is not high, but the view is good. In autumn, local fruits are sold at the roadside, which is about 100 yen. There are toilets, rest areas, signposts everywhere, and they are well maintained. You can also visit Mt. Miwa at the Sai Shrine.
