Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

With a family history in the region going back 250 years, the knowledge of SMG is very complete. Andy, the director of programs, started guiding here in 1992 after returning from Operation Desert Storm and working all over the world in the Navy. SMG pioneered many of the adventures they now guide and in fact, Andy and his guides, as young men in early 70s thru today, were some of the first climbers on many of the rock outcrops...and continue to set new standards in both rock and ice climbing in the region. The SMG team not only serves on Shenandoah’s technical rescue team, but all of the lead guides serve as instructors for high angle rescue for the greater National Park Service. In 2011, SMG was selected by Southern Living Magazine as provider of the BEST Summer Adventure in the South (cascading). Additionally, Andy has been recognized by Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine as one of the top mountain guides in the Blue Ridge, and in 2017, he was honored as an ”Outdoor Legend”

Enjoy the wildlife that lives along the banks of the Appomattox River from the deck of a kayak. The Appomattox is home to a large assortment of waterfowl from Blue Herons to Wood Ducks, Bald Eagles regularly accompany us and during the spring the elusive Sturgeon can sometimes be seen leaping out of the water followed by a loud cracking sound as it strikes the water. The Tri-City area is rich with history, the Civil War raged along the river banks and still to this day parts of the pontoon bridge constructed in the 1860's are visible. The bridge constructed by northern troops stretched from Points of Rocks to Petersburg and served as passage for more than 50,000 Union troops. Explore the mighty Appomattox River with one of our guides during a regularly scheduled paddle trip or schedule one of your own. We welcome groups and our American Canoe Association (ACA) certified trainers are available for group and individual training and welcome paddlers of all skill levels. Come on out and let the friendly folks at ETA introduce you to the "Paddle Life". The world always looks better from a kayak.
