I purchased an engagement ring for my fiancee at My-Hoya, in Minge's new shop located in downtown Yangon. Minge was super helpful and showed me lots of different options, styles and gemstones from her collection, all in the comfort of the new shop based in a converted apartment with plenty of refreshments so I had plenty of time and didn't feel rushed. In the end I decided on a beautiful blue sapphire from Myanmar and Minge set it in a custom-made pave style gold engagement ring - with matching earrings. The stone and the ring look great and my fiancee loves it! It is really nice to have something unique to remind us of our time in Myanmar rather than a traditional diamond, and I would not have been able to make the choice without visiting the shop and seeing all the options in person. But much more than this I have to say a special thank you to Minge for making the ring for us during very difficult circumstances. I ordered just two days before the military coup but Minge still managed to make and deliver the ring on-time for our proposal on Valentine's day! I think she was just as excited as I was and really keen for my partner to have her perfect ring, she pulled out all the stops. We've since become friends with Minge and her husband Gili and had some more opal earrings made before we left Myanmar, which are also fantastic. We hope to be back one day and see you both again soon!

We are a contemporary Fair Trade craft shop supporting small Myanmar producers, opening opportunities for them to improve their social and economic situation. We are committed to using local materials and local artisans to produce quality, handmade products with a modern twist. Our producers include people with HIV, street youths, the mentally and physically disabled, and small family businesses fighting poverty. When you are in Yangon drop by to pick up some ethically-sourced memories of your time in the land of a thousand pagodas. We also have a shop in Bagan!
Pomelo is a lovely souvenir shop that should be a stop when shopping in Yangon. Well located next to Monsoon restaurant for a lunch or dinner stop, and close to the Colonial District near the Strand area. Selection is small but well executed; prices are fair and the items are well made. Very attentive shop staff; they leave you alone to browse but are on hand to answer questions. I came in late afternoon, after a day traipsing around the city. Seeing that I was a bit weary, they offered me a glass of water which was caring and thoughtful. Best of all ... proceeds go to local charities for your tourist spend to do some good.

U Thant House is a place to remember the life and work of former United Nations Secretary-General U Thant and to discuss national and global challenges. There is a permanent exhibition featuring dozens of photographs and film footage tracing U Thant's life from the modest beginnings in the Irrawaddy delta town of Pantanaw to his time as the world's premier diplomat. Visitors can also take a guided tour performed by our knowledgeable museum facilitators. Please notice we are open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm. Visits outside these open hours can be arranged.
We had a wonderful visit at this museum. You make a donation of 10,000 at the outside of the building. The docent will invite you to first review the artifacts, photographs and descriptions that are on the second level. There is also a 10 minute video on the second floor. Then you come downstairs and ask for a quick tour of the main floor which basically explains who is in each of the photographs along with U Thant. The docent was quite knowledgeable. You can purchase a guide to the museum, for $3, although they were sold out of English guides when we were there. U Thant a great man. He carefully navigated through several world crises. I believe he would be very disappointed in the current state of the United Nations. The General Assembly seems to be dominated by the 23 Arab and other Muslim countries and their supporters. The Security Council is dominated by the veto power of Russia and China. How sad. If you like this review and or the photographs, please feel free to give me a thumbs up. You may also wish to check out my reviews of other tourist sites in the city as well as in Singapore, Bangkok, Taiwan, cities in Cambodia and Vietnam as well as in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, and South America.
