10 Golf Courses in Pawleys Island That You Shouldn't Miss

July 28, 2021 Sachiko Swiger

Located on South Carolina's beautiful Grand Strand, Pawley's Island is the laid back alternative to the Myrtle Beach vacation. Shopping, dining, or golfing is all within reach. Just south of Myrtle Beach, Pawley's Island is best known for the Hammock Shops, a unique shopping experience of quaint small shops nestled under trees full of Spanish Moss. You can find everything from shoes to local artwork, or you might choose to go golfing on one of the many world-class golf courses in the area. While Pawley's is quieter and more relaxed than nearby Myrtle Beach, the latter's close proximity provides infinite possibilities for dining and nightlife. Murrell's Inlet, a quaint fishing village, and its bevy of seafood restaurants is just up the road and also has a Salt Marsh Preserve. Simple but delicious hamburgers at the River City cafe or finer dining at one of the hundreds of other restaurants are all within short driving distance. After dinner you might seek out one of the many venues for arts and entertainment. The Carolina Opry is well known for its amazing shows. You can see a live show or dance the night away…or both! Enjoying the beach is the obvious activity but there is so much more to do than just that. Parasailing is a popular option, as is a visit to the Huntington State Park to explore the local flora and fauna. The park has many programs to entertain and enlighten both the young and old. On the grounds is Atalaya, the home of the artist Anna Hyatt Huntington. Just across the street is Brookgreen Gardens which features many of the sculptures of the artist as well as the lovely manicured gardens.

Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

Classic plantation-style club recognized by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine as one of the "Top 100 Courses You Can Play."

Reviewed By tjhaynes8 - Georgia, United States

Great course by Mike Strantz and with lots of risk/reward opportunities. Not very long from the tips but requires some strategic shots. Be sure to study the green before your approach shot as some provide opportunity to funnel the ball closer to the cup. The greens rolled very well and are fast. Course was is excellent shape considering recents storms producing large amounts of rain. It is definitely worth the cost and a trip from Myrtle Beach if you’re staying there. Easy to see why this course ranks in the America Top 100 and. I’m ready to tee it up again!

True Blue Golf Course

Designed by Mike Strantz, this is the more rugged and challenging sister course of the Caledonia.

This course is another Mike Strantz gem and a true joy to play. With the wide fairways you can expect to hit it safely, but, if you don't keep it in the fairway you may be in one of the waste areas, or possibly water. The course is very well maintained, and the greens hold a good shot and putt true. With 5 different tee boxes this course is fun for all different handicaps. The Gold tees are set at just over 7,000 yards and the Green tees at just under 5,000 yards. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. This course was a bucket list course for me (I plan to play all Mike Strantz courses.

my favourite course as back nine is different than front nine - if in fairway you still are challenged by next shot. Greens great shape this year. the only issue is the price. i stay nearby and play various courses but pawleys is the best course....

Course was in fantastic shape yesterday and it is definately a "shotmakers" course if you plan on playing there. I read reviews where people complained about trees in the way on certain holes and you just have to play position golf. Greens were receptive and fast, course was overseeded wall to wall and all bunkers were raked with nice sand in them...we played on a busy day in 4 1/2 hours with a short stop at the clubhouse after 9 holes. I have only played there one other time.....and will certainly go back with my golf group...we had 20 players there yesterday!

Litchfield Country Club

Recommended golf course in Myrtle Beach.

My wife and I enjoyed a delicious Sunday brunch at the Litchfield Country Club on Sunday. You do not have to be a member to dine there. The hostess staff and the wait staff are the friendliest people in South Carolina, which is saying a lot because South Carolina is the most polite state in the Union. The salads are exceptional, especially the apple and pear salad and the potato salad. You will love the carved ham, the waffles, the grits, and the delicious desserts. The price is incredible: less than $22 per person! This may be the best value in the Low Country. God bless everyone there through Hurricane Dorian.

Southern plantation golf at its finest: fairways are bordered by ancient cypress and live oak trees; fresh water lakes and marshes dictate much of the play; and historic manors of a by-gone era now cater to returning golfers.

The Founders Club

One of the oldest courses on the Southern Strand, this club offers large greens, and no parallel holes; two characteristics that tend to be absent from many of the modern courses at Myrtle Beach.

Reviewed By brnblasko - Kingston, Canada

Played this course yesterday and compared to 2 years ago when I played it last, it was a 180 in its condition. Fairways are green and dense grass growth. Greens are full and for this time of year rolled true may not be the fastest but again what a difference. Waste bunkers and there are a lot of them if you do not hit the fairways are very playable if you wish to. Select the right tee blocks and have fun good for all levels of golfers....truely the nicest surprise I have had since being here.. well done Founders Club, this coming from an 8 handicap.
