Most residents of the far-north territory of Yukon live here in Whitehorse, its capital city. And they'll seize any opportunity to get outside and take in the region's breathtaking wilderness beauty, whether they prefer hunting, angling or cheering on (or participating in) the annual Yukon Quest sled-dog race.

While en-route to Carcross, I stopped in at the shop after seeing the signs for it, and wow was I glad I did. Not only is it stocked full of Yukon specimens, many from the old mines around Whitehorse, but also has superb specimens from the Northwest Territories and around the world. The owner is extremely helpful and patient, and shared lots of interesting information about the history of the mines in the area, and helped me locate some specimens I really wanted for my collection. Prices are extremely affordable, and there's a wide range of rocks, minerals and souvenirs so you can get gifts for everyone you know, even those in your family with no interest in crystals/rocks (heresy, I know!).

This vibrant downtown space features contemporary Yukon art by members of the Yukon Art Society, as well as the Hougen Heritage Gallery, which features history exhibitions by MacBride Museum of Yukon History and Friends of the Yukon Archives Society. Shop for original art and gifts, professional art supplies, and tickets for local events. This community facility also offers art and fine craft workshops.
This is a true community place, which is also very welcoming to visitors. I have been at some local galleries in other cities where I felt I needed to be a local to really get what was going on. Arts Underground has low-key but classy exhibit openings every few months, shows from amazing local artists, rotating photos from an impressive collection of Yukon historical photo collections, plus a great selection of art supplies. If you want a place to shop for anything from some unique earrings to a beautiful piece of pottery or a fantastic painting, visit the Arts Underground! For locals it is also a fantastic place to take classes in a variety of artistic media- pottery, drawing, painting and mixed media. Love this place!
