Hiking trails and art galleries abound in Stellenbosch, but it's wine that takes center stage. More than 100 wine cellars, most open to the public, surround the oak-lined South African town, and tasting tours operate daily. Winter brings a four-day festival celebrating the local vintages. The historic town center houses the trading-post style shop Oom Samie se Winkel, the Neo-Gothic Moederkerk church, and museums dedicated to toys, military memorabilia, autos and early life on the Cape.

My husband bought me the most beautiful pearl necklace and earrings at Perles par Rousseau in Stellenbosch. The fitting was in sterling silver and I was surprised by the wealth of knowledge Rosseau had about pearls, their history, origin and the different styles of pearls. He even suggested the right colour pearl for my skintone. I returned a couple of days later, because I felt the necklace was a bit too short and he gladly exchanged it for a slightly longer necklace. I have been to several pearl shops in Thailand before, but nowhere did I see the same quality service, product and integrity in a pearl dealer.

The market is in a building, as well as outside, under cover. There is ample seating where you can enjoy the delicious food and drinks (alcoholic & non-alcoholic). The craft items has a local flair to it - art, jewellery, decor items, etc. It is a pet friendly market.

Alto over the years has built up a reputation of having excellent red wines. This hasn't change and with their current range available for tasting it is truly a tribute to what red wine is all about. We made a booking for a wine tasting as we were a group of 6 and wanted to sit outside on their covered deck as it offers beautiful views over the valley, all the way to Table Mountain. They also have indoor seating options and for very large groups they make a plan for you on the lawn in-front of the tasting area. They have a fire place inside for those cold winter days, and you can also take a walk through the barrel cellar. We did the biltong and wine pairing which included 5 of their wines (Alto Rouge, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, M.P.H.S, Alto Port) and all of us felt that the pairings where perfectly done. If you want to taste their Port you need to make sure you get there soon while there is still stock, as they have decided to discontinue it and focus solely on the red wines. We had such a great team and a big thanks to the tasting room staff who put the cherry on top of the entire tasting experience and I look forward to all the exciting things Alto has in store for the future.
