Mandalay Region (Burmese: မန္တလေးတိုင်းဒေသကြီး, pronounced [máɴdəlé táiɴ dèθa̰ dʑí], formerly Mandalay Division) is an administrative division of Myanmar. It is located in the center of the country, bordering Sagaing Region and Magway Region to the west, Shan State to the east, and Bago Region and Kayin State to the south. The regional capital is Mandalay. In the south of the division lies the national capital of Naypyitaw. The division consists of seven districts, which are subdivided into 30 townships and 2,320 wards and village-tracts.

Jasmine Family Lacquerware Workshop

Reviewed By sso617 - Bern, Switzerland

One of the best things I did in the Bagan area, maybe THE best, was go to this workshop. You will have a real experience. It is a family business, on their family compound (amazing to see), and they make beautiful, exquisite lacquer items of all types. There was zero pressure, everyone was friendly, but most importantly, they actually wanted to have a relationship with you as someone interested in what they do in the traditional way. It's hard to describe--they show you *everything* about how lacquer items are made: materials, processes, etc. Going here is a completely different experience from just buying a lacquer item in a shop. It will mean so much more to you when you get it home if you buy it here. And you will be convinced that you got the best possible product. Prices seemed entirely fair to me. But, again, this is a whole experience, not just a shopping experience. The location of the shop is correct on Google maps. Just keep going until your dot is where their shop is. As others have noted, please use an e-bike to get there; local politics and the location of the shop dictate that the owners must pay tuk-tuk and taxi drivers to show up, so they are forced to charge you more as well. It's just a five minute walk from the main road, if that, but again, e-bike is best. I was a solo traveler and sometimes that means feeling a bit awkward in situations like this, but in this case it felt completely natural. Can't recommend enough. There's a reason it's the #1 shopping experience in Bagan!

MOE GEMS JEWELLERY

Moe and her nieces treated us like we were royalty. Moe could have sold us a much more expensive piece but because she wants you to be happy more than she wants to make a huge profit, she makes sure you get the right piece you will wear. We wanted a Pigeon Blood Myanmar Ruby ring. I thought I wanted it for my middle finger. She said I would need a large ruby then and it would be a ring that would be "too fancy" and I wouldn't wear it everyday - which was my other criteria. Therefore she sold me a pinky ring. She educated us more on natural verses heat treated rubies. I LOVE my ring and haven't stopped wearing it since that day. Moe could have made a higher purchase from us but instead she wanted me to leave with what I came there to buy. You will get a good deal, quality and the real thing that you can trust and a wonderful experience with Moe.

This is a very awesome shop in so many different ways! It’s a great pit stop for picking up unique and beautifully made fair trade items. More importantly, it also gives the shopper a chance to connect with and understand Myanmar’s social-economics landscape a bit better as the store supports various local communities. The shop assistant was incredibly friendly and took his time to explain many items to me.

Sein Myint

Reviewed By DDD29626

I collect Shwe gyi do, and Sein Mying is the main sort-of advocate and reviver of this art form in Mandalay. Mainly, though, I found this place interesting because of its incredible art gallery. He has an incredible collection of Burmese art, including a few of the very old style shwe gyi do, perhaps going back to the royal period or not long thereafter. The quality is absolutely stunning and far beyond even the vintage or semi-antique pieces I collect. I had read about these, but never seen one before. He also has lacquerware, opium weights, and paintings that are really amazing. Plus there are many of his own remarkable paintings available for sale. Entrance to the gallery is free. The shwe gyi do sold from the workshop on the premises are quite unique. The workmanship is very fine, but there is only a relatively small amount of work on each piece. Most of the real estate on each piece is just blank velvet. I personally prefer the sort-of mid-century pieces that are not quite as fine, but often completely worked, and also made with the old-style handmade sequins and cabochons. If you are looking for these, go to Rainforest or Marie Min and ask about them. The owner has a huge collection in a spare room and his prices are incredibly reasonable. You can get a beautiful semi-antique piece for much less than the considerably lower quality contemporary pieces available in the tourist shops, which in my opinion, hold no interest.
