Crete and a number of surrounding islands and islets constitute the region of Crete (Greek: Περιφέρεια Κρήτης), one of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece. The capital and the largest city is Heraklion. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065.

6 months back a small team from Rethymno we walked throw the gorge inside the river. The landscape is amazing and the palm trees as you approach the beach make the place tropical.

We hiked from the top to the bottom. My wife and I did it with our 2 and 5 year olds. The 5 year old loved it. The 2 year old had to be carried most of the way. It took 3.5 hours with a picnic stop. All rockfall has been dealt with and the way is clearly marked. The bar at the bottom called a taxi. Wait time was only 10 minutes and cost a was 35 euros for a 7 seater.

6. 9. 2020 Breathtaking, adventurous hike through the canyon, the bottom of a dry river. 3 km of active movement through rugged terrain, where you climb some sections of rocks using ropes and ladders. Great. We, the amateurs, did it too. There is no other way back than to repeat the whole route back. I recommend to all more active people. Not suitable for small children. This is a easy two hour hike through a beautiful gorge. Entrance ticket 3 Euros. Just take good walking or running shoes and water. It gets really hot in the gorge so be prepared. This is not that busy and not crowded like Samaria Gorge. We noticed a lot of people struggling with the loose stones and the trail, but it is really pretty easy. It took us just under two hours and we took it easy. At the end you get accosted by taxi drivers at the various tavernas offering to take you back to the starting point. You can do this or walk back through the gorge. Recommended activity for Crete!

Really worth a visit, the drive up the switchbacks to the gorge gives stunning views along the coastline. The entrance at the top of the gorge is by a 138 metre high rickety bridge (where there is bungee jumping at the weekend) and you then walk through a beautiful old village (much of it in ruins) The gorge itself is beautiful with high-sided walls and great views.
