Given that it is Christmas Day 2020, and I used Stephen’s services to create a present for my special person, it is only fitting that I praise his skills as a jeweller and teacher. I have previously designed pieces and had them made, but this was the first time I have been brave enough to actually make a piece myself. As a designer, I am interested in process and technical aspects and Stephen’s knowledge level and skill in imparting that knowledge was less a teaching and more, an enlightening conversation. I spent 20 hours with him in his ‘workshop’, masked and aware of the current Covid needs of distancing, but it was very much a friendly and entertaining exposure to the limited aspects of jewelry that my piece required. The thrill of carefully cutting into a piece of gold, filing it into finished form and polishing it, soldering it, marking it and then preparing it for stone placement. Absolutely thrilling to realize the piece, by my own hand, under his guidance. I will surely return when the opportunity presents itself, and create something else, possibly less challenging in terms of material choice - this was gold and diamonds - maybe a patterned bracelet. I can as yet not show you an image, as the person who it is for, has yet to receive it - like the wise men, that occasion is delayed till early January. My exposure was one on one, necessitated by the current Covid reality, but I have friends who have attended his small group sessions and been equally impressed. I heartily recommend Art Lab Todi, - and while educational, like me, you will probably have a new friend by the end of your experience.
