10 Free Things to do in Stellenbosch That You Shouldn't Miss

March 21, 2022 Janean Rudisill

Hiking trails and art galleries abound in Stellenbosch, but it's wine that takes center stage. More than 100 wine cellars, most open to the public, surround the oak-lined South African town, and tasting tours operate daily. Winter brings a four-day festival celebrating the local vintages. The historic town center houses the trading-post style shop Oom Samie se Winkel, the Neo-Gothic Moederkerk church, and museums dedicated to toys, military memorabilia, autos and early life on the Cape.

Stunning views, great for pictures! The grassy outside area made for a pleasant wine tasting experience and we enjoyed the wine selection. Follow their instructions for finding the winery during the road construction - it's definitely worth the trouble. Thank you to Heinrich for making our visit so much fun and sharing information on safari locations!

Beautiful architecture, the church typifies the grand style of the past, the history of the first people that settled here. The beautiful arching seating inside, spotlessly clean and elegant, definitely worth an hour to float around. Situated at the top of church street.

Five of us had the winemaker's lunch this afternoon. One cannot reserve a table so we rocked up at 12.15. The venue is attractive and is situated in pretty surroundings. There are enough parking bays for everyone. We sat on the terrace, which was very pleasant. Our waiter was excellent : friendly and attentive. There are two choices : either steak or salmon, each served with a glass of wine. My steak was exactly as ordered and delicious and was accompanied by French fries and a salad. Excellent - and so was the wine. Those that ordered the salmon were equally enthusiastic. We rounded off the meal with coffee and went home highly delighted.

Very warm and friendly service from all and the food was aesthetically presented and the portions more than generous. The house sauvignon blanc complemented the platter perfectly.

Peter Falke Winery

The exclusive winery of Peter Falke is nestled against the majestic slopes of the Helderberg mountains in the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands, South Africa. Groenvlei Farm is home to rambling magenta bougainvillea, delicate scented roses and wild lavender growing alongside carefully cultivated vineyards. Dating back to the 18th century, the traditional gabled Cape Dutch buildings of the wine estate belie a contrasting modernity within. The stately old homestead is partnered by a "boutique" winery, contemporary wine tasting room and luxurious outdoor lounge which have established Peter Falke Wines as the most elegant and serene sundowner retreat in the winelands. Owner Peter Falke and his better half, Daniele Gortz, invite you to enjoy the exceptional wines that reflect their lifestyle, cultures and personalities.
