Lovely as it is, this little country town of less than 8,000 about 75 miles north of Lisbon wouldn’t be on the radar if it weren’t for its most famous citizens: the three shepherd children who, in 1917, saw monthly visions of the Virgin Mary in the Cova da Iria pasture. Today, the site is marked by the Basílica de Fátima, where pilgrims come on the 13th of every month to honor the Virgin and her young visionaries, especially in May and October, when the apparitions originally began and ended.

This national shrine is the site where three young peasant shepherds spied a "lady brighter than the sun," which was, many believe, the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary in this region of Portugal.
It takes a full day trip from Lisbon to visit Fatima, Balthahal monastery, Bleeding host church at Santarem and Fatima. We were a group of 15 and we hired a 15 seater mini bus with a driver from the Mundo do Flamingo travel agency. Their charges are very, very reasonable - just 500 euros for 15 of us to visit these 3 sites. The driver was very friendly and engaging. Fatima was awesome. We saw the Lucia, Jacinto and Francisco's humble homes - very touching, we also got to personally meet Sr. Lucia's 99 year old niece. The Via Sacra - way of the cross garden is very calm and beautiful. The highlight of the trip was the candle light procession at 9.30 pm. Don't miss this event. Very beautiful to see Our Lady revered by some many from all over the world. When we reached back to our Lisbon hotel, it was almost 1.00 am! This place is worth visiting.

This church is huge. I was told that it seats 9000. It's across the square from the old church. It is more modern than the other church and very clean in design. I liked it.

The path up the little hill to the Valinhos Sanctuary is lined with pious images of the Via Crucis. The Sanctuary itself house a small chapel with a scene of the Crucifixion topside. A good place to pray, and also with magnificent views.

irrespective of your beliefs this is a well maintained simple house that is quite humbling and if you don't mind walking from fatima there is an excellent footpath(via sacra valinhos-aljustrel)that is an absolute pleasure to walk along and do follow every footpath as i am sure what you will see will impress you as much as it impressed me.

Visiting Lucia's home certainly helps to understand why Mary appeared in such a location. Very devout family. Even more special was to visit with Lucia's 90+ niece who lives across the stree.

We inadvertently passed this attractive, but unassuming church on our way to the Fatima shrine. As “luck” would have it, we arrived shortly before 11am Sunday mass. We watched the regular parishioners settle into their places and stayed to participate in a wonderfully ordinary liturgy. What I mean is that the Fatima shrine is so grand that it tempts one to forget that these three children were regular kid from a regular parish community. They were not special in any way, until the Virgin chose them as conduits of her message to the world. We found it helpful to be reminded that God can use ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things.

The best time to visit this shrine is around the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima. All other times are good to visit, but this is simply the best, for me.

Got there with mass beggining at the apparition chapel. Different sensation for the second visit. Much more religious feeling this time. Better impression of the Basilica as well. Left the place in peace. Prayed for so many people.
