We were pleasantly surprised by this unexpected gem of a pub in this small town on the river shannon. Its quaint decor and dusty bric a brac make a welcoming and entertaining backdrop for the music and song that we are told go on nightly during the summer.they dont make em like this anymore.

Clara Bog Visitor Centre

Clara Bog Visitor Centre is located on the R436 in Clara town- 10 minutes' drive from the M6 motorway and 15 minutes' drive from Tullamore. The child friendly Visitor Centre provides a fun, interactive and educational introduction to Ireland's most famous rare raised bog habitat. There are activity sheets for children and a short film for older children and adults to watch. There is access to the nature reserve year round via a 1km looped bog boardwalk that has interpretation signage.

Reviewed By GeoffH150 - East Maitland, Australia

A walk around the boardwalk, a mile from the Visitor Centre in town, will give a good introduction and some understanding of plants and animals in a peat bog, prior to visiting the Visitor Centre. The board walk makes access very easy, and strategically placed information panels inform the visitor. The Visitor Centre can be a little hard to find as it's not all that well signposted, but turn left upon entering the town and you'll see it on the R436. Find out about peat as a source of heating and power, as well as sphagnum moss. The Centre staff person was most friendly and informative. The centre gives a good understanding of the role of peat in Ireland's history. Look for peat being harvested locally as you travel along the R436.
