Wild horses can actually drag you away…to Chincoteague Island. Here, ponies run wild, you can catch or dig up your own seafood, and the beaches bring literal breaths of fresh air. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderfully unspoiled spot for bird watching, horseback riding, swimming and biking. Every summer since 1925, all of the feral ponies on Assateague are rounded up for the world-famous annual Pony Swim over to Chincoteague.

The Chamber of Commerce was very helpful in planning my trip to Chincoteague. They explained the operations of both the Virginia and Maryland sides of Asseoteague Island and recommended hotels that fit my particular needs (traveling off season with a pet). If you have questions planning your trip, call the Chamber of Commerce first.

The Captain Timothy Hill House was built circa 1800 and is the oldest known house on Chincoteague Island. Originally built to have a wooden chimney...the replica of that chimney is now in place. Listed on The National Register of Historic Places and The Virginia Landmarks Register in 2011...a visit to this house is a step back in time to the early life on the island. Open to the public during the summer season with tours on Fridays 1-3 PM. Other times by appointment. Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated.
Enjoyed seeing the chimney design very much. Cute photo opportunity while you are on Chincoteague Island.

I recently stopped in on a trip through town. The store has an expensive collection of old and new books, art, and lots of local information. I spent a good amount of time just browsing the shelves and enjoying the space. Definitely a place to go if you are looking for a great book shop.
