10 Free Things to do in Cheltenham That You Shouldn't Miss

May 18, 2022 Alida England

Cheltenham was just your average, sleepy town until the discovery of a spring in 1716, after which it became Britain's most popular spa town. (Like Palm Springs without the casinos.) Local Cheltonians have a reputation for being wealthy and respectable, and a walk along the Promenade will give you a first-class view of their wonderful houses, shops and gardens. After taking in the waters at the Pittville Pump Room (great name for a spa), check out the Art Gallery and Museum to learn about the social history of Cheltenham.

The Bicycle Hub

We are the only Bike Hire facility in Cheltenham and have a great selection of bikes for short or long-term rental; perfect for exploring the local countryside. Choose from a range of adult bikes and tandems, children’s bikes, tagalongs and trailers, as well FreeGo electric bikes so you can enjoy a day out with the entire family.

We rented bikes for 6 days to bike around the Cotswolds and couldn't be happier with our choice in bike rentals! This shop rents both e-bikes and hybrids- I chose an e-bike because of the very hilly terrain and my husband chose a hybrid. Both bikes were wonderful- so much so that I did not want to return mine at the end of the rental! Service was excellent- responsive email booking, wonderfully welcoming and informative service at the shop, bikes came with all of the repair tools, helmets, etc., with reassurance that if the e-bike broke down to give them a call to come out and they would repair it anywhere on our journey! Located conveniently behind the train station and near a lovely bike path into Cheltenham and beyond. I cannot say enough good things about this place- just rent from them, you will not regret it!

Favourite Beers

Favourite Beers has an ever changing range of over 400 UK bottled ales (many bottle conditioned), over 120 Ciders and Perrys (now in draft as well as bottles), a large range of international beers featuring over 120 bottled beers from Belgium and an expanding range of excellent German and US beers. We also carry a range of English country and fruit wines and meads. The range of UK ales permanently features a growing number from breweries within our region and this is supplemented by an ever changing selection from around the country. Leigh tries to add beers from at least three new Breweries a month – often featuring a particular area of the country. Our beers are available to buy individually or in bulk (we offer generous discounts including discounts for card carrying CAMRA members) and we also have a number of gift package options (ideal for presents – as are our gift vouchers).

This place remains by far the best place for craft beer in Cheltenham, whether that be from the ten taps or to purchase cans/bottles (which you can drink in for just a 50p ‘corkage’ fee. Friday nights with late closing remain my favourite, but they’re open until 7pm other days.

The Frog and Fiddle

The Frog is one of the most atmospheric venues in Cheltenham. With live music, good beer and all major sporting events shown on our 12 screens.

Reviewed By BenSunners - Thornbury, United Kingdom

Have been visiting Frog fairly regularly for around three years now, and it's definitely one of the best spots for sport and music in Cheltenham. Good Points - Always a good atmosphere, indoors and out, generous smoking area - Student prices for drinks very reasonable - Lots of TVs for any sports - Have had Christmas parties here before and it's a great venue - Pool tables - Friendly staff and service - You are welcome to bring your own food/takeaway inside which is actually a great option, it's good that they are open and friendly about this Negative - Toilets are pretty dirty - Some sofas/seating is falling apart Overall a great pub in Cheltenham, would strongly recommend over most other pubs. Generally a good atmosphere and great for sport and music. Can't think of masses of things to complain about here.

Sandford Park Alehouse

Reviewed By VamosChicos - Cheltenham, United Kingdom

Sandford Park Alehouse (or “SPA” for short) is tucked away along the London Road, coming out of town. A buzzing real ale house with a large garden with huge awning/marquee over it - which is perfect for get-togethers in our currently permitted groups of 6 outside.. It’s a vibrant, buzzing place! They do have a chef but, as a lovely gesture, are currently doing pop up kitchens with local eateries who are unable to reopen yet because they don’t have seating out in the open. Last night, for example, was Bar Padron tapas. Food & ambiance fantastic and, excuse the French girl, but they even have Provençal rosé. Because it’s for the hipsters, the default is that they ask you to scan a QR code and view the menu for food & drinks online & order online. However, there is a Plan B: speak nicely to the staff and they will take your order the old fashioned way, good ole pen & paper! Booking essential, it’s extremely popular! Enjoy!
