10 Free Things to do in Cappadocia That You Shouldn't Miss

August 12, 2021 Alice Mieles

Lying in south central Turkey, the moonscaped region of Cappadocia, southeast of Ankara, is most famous for unique geological features called fairy chimneys. The large, cone-like formations were created over time by erosion of the relatively soft volcanic ash around them. Past cultures have dug into them to create dwellings, castles (like Uchisar) and even entire underground cities like Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, used as hiding places by early Christians. Nearby Kayseri is the gateway to the area.

My parents and I first met Ruth in the early 2000s. Last spring during the midst of the pandemic, I worked via email with Ruth to select some kilim cushion covers for the house my husband and I had just moved into. The attached picture are a mix of some I purchased in 2015 during a visit to Turkey and some that were shipped to us during the pandemic. Online ordering was easy and secure, and shipping was fast. But nothing compares to actually visiting her store.

I was planning to Sultan Carpets after reading the reviews they had over here, and I was NOT disappointed. I was greeted by Ali and Mustafa the first day I got there, they first choice I have to make on their shop is between a Turkish tea, or an Apple tea. They talked me through the ranges of carpets types, qualities, and prices. He wasn't hesitated to unroll any of his carpets to give me choices of which one carpets suits me the best, the price are very very reasonable, InsyaAllah the carpets I got will suits the house really fine. Ali's English is exceptional, I know so many Turkish around Göreme speaks English but there is something different with him, turns out he spent time in America for 5 years which explains a lot, him and Mustafa were very honest about their business, they are very comfortable to talk to, a genuine carpet shop runs by genuine carpet lover persons. Me as a moslem brother is proud to see our brother have such dedication and honesty, a very good example of Turkish hospitality! I really wanna go back to Göreme, and with God's will if I do, I'll definitely visit Sultan Carpet again!

My boyfriend and I are visiting turkey from Los Angeles. We found Cappadocia Dowry by driving by and ended up buying 2 beautiful hand made rugs when we didn’t even need. The shop is ran by Ozgur, his brother and father, a wonderful family and we couldn’t be happier! After visiting several cities all over turkey by far they have the best quality rugs with the most character! Ozgur is amazing, honest, helped us and taught us so much about the history and detail of each rug. I highly highly recommend supporting this wonderful kind family who knows what they are doing! They even offered to ship the rugs to us. We couldn’t be happier! Thank you Ozgur! We’ll definitely keep in touch and be buying many more pieces from you in the future!
