White Desert

Reviewed By Saikat_on_wheels - Kolkata (Calcutta), India

I chose a full Moon day in February. A bus from the Tent City and a camel cart drove us into the vast expanse of the Desert. I walked toward the horizon and it receded from me as I approached, leaving only the white crust of salt all around me. The sight put me into a trance. Never before had I encountered with such an otherworldly sight. The Sun set on the white desert. A strange feeling of smallness crept into my heart before the enormity of the wilderness of The Nature. I got back to the Tent and again, around 10 pm, I was driven into the place with the Full Moon overhead. And Lo and Behold! It is where the fairies land to whisper their mysteries into the ear. I was really hypnotized by the beauty of the Great Desert. The chill of February night didn't touch me.

This NGO impressed me a great deal. There are two products that I particularly would like to mention; bags made from industrial plastic waste and products made from plant based leather. I thought these two products besides helping the local artisans also are very environment friendly. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I recommend Khamir.

Traditional Rogan Art

Reviewed By Daskamal

"Rogan"is Persian word and the Rogan painting is about 300 years old form of art originated in Persia & Pakistan. Today nine members of Khatri family led by Abdul Gafoor in Nirona village of Kutch district in Gujarat have not only revived the forgotten art but also trained about 100 girls in the village in Rogan painting. The details of the art has been very nicely explained by a number of reviewers in the Trip Advisors. Gafoor bhai has been honoured with National award and seven state awards. His paintings are often gifted to visiting dignitaries including former President of USA Mr. Barak Obama. Visit to Nirona village, which is typical dusty small village, can be clubbed with the white Rann festival as it is about 45 minute drive from Dhordo, where the festival is held. There is another house at the beginning of the narrow lane leading to Gafoor bhai's house, which also has display of Rogan Paintings which must b have come up later. The village is also famous for brass bells used to tie around the neck of the cattle. The uniqueness of it is that the bells can be differently tuned, which helps in distinguishing one herd from another. Sometimes the bell around the lead Cattle neck has a unique sound which helps the other cattle in the group to follow it.
