This is a beautiful park. Great place to enjoy a walk with the kids and family dog. Also a great place to take a ride on a bike. Very pleasant and relaxing place to fade away lifes daily stress and worries. What a great gift to share with the public.

Peoples State Forest is a great place to go with for outdoor recreation. It offers trails of multiple difficulties and lengths that allow you to choose your adventure for the day. It also has spots to pull over for a picnic, river-based recreational activities including trout fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing, the Barkhamsted Lighthouse and other cultural and historic sites. We visited in autumn and enjoying hiking the Robert Ross and Jessie Gerard trails for awesome fall foliage displays.

I go as often as I can. I like to enjoy the fresh air and the park has several trails, some shorts and another a little longer, any of them are great. I brought some friends and they really enjoy the park.

The property was purchased from a long time Newtown family in the early 70's. It is split upper and lower by the river / lake. There are several hiking trails but unfortunately they are over run by numerous mountain bikers and are extremely muddy and slippery with this mild winter not helping. In a normal winter when the lake freezes you can see the wintering eagles flying up and down the river looking for an easy meal. In the summer the lake is swarmed by folks illegally swimming and picnicking along the shoreline and the boat traffic as a result of the two state launches can be a bit loud for those of us who live near by. With a terribly understaffed organization the State Department of Energy and Environment hasn't been able to keep up with the huge numbers of people who are leaving mountains of garbage such a dirty diapers, beer cans and the remnants of their camp fires. The majority of the visitors are unaware (thou there are notices posted at both entrances), that hunting is permitted for both small game and deer in season. As a result hunters are frequently frustrated by the bikers who use the trails that are supposed to be for hikers and hunters exclusively. A worry is that one of those Dads with their daughter on their shoulders wearing a brown coat with a furry white collar will be mistaken for a deer by a hunter and something terrible could occur.
