10 Food Tours in Northern Portugal That You Shouldn't Miss

September 15, 2021 Randal Brittian

Brimming with both history and natural wonder, Northern Portugal is home to Porto, the city that gave the country its name, as well as the important ancient town of Braga. Also here is Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park, a gorgeous wilderness area of mountains, gorges, water features and wildlife. Many picturesque villages and manor houses dot the countryside. Two areas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alto Douro Wine Region, and the Paleolithic rock art in the Côa Valley.

This was a brilliant day out visiting different wineries and port houses in the Douro Valley. We liked all the places we visited and learned a lot about the history and methods of port and wine making. We loved the river trip and lunch in a small town restaurant. It was great to get out into the countryside and be chauffeured around without worrying about anything. Our guide was really charming and knowledgeable – we asked a lot of questions about all sorts of topics and he was very willing to have a good conversation and seemed to know everything. The other people on our tour were lovely and we actually met some of them in town and had a drink a couple of days later.

We did a private tour to Coimbra and Aveiro with Touch Tours in the first days after the reopening post Corona on 24 June. A super positive experience. Spacious luxurious vehicle, super punctual and caring guide called Tiago, full respect for the new corona safety measures - I travelled alone with my 3 teenage children. The commutation with Touch Tours (André) from start to finish was impeccable. The company listens to what you want to do. We are very satisfied.

I made the online booking only one day ahead. The couple doing the small business are very friendly!! They gave me some recommendations where to go. Unfortunately I had a flat tire after a few kilometers. I went back and they fixed it without any problem so I could take the bike again for the rest of the day! I cycled up and down the coast side and it was hilarious!! Next time I am in Porto I go there again, promised!!!!!!

We are fans of Vinho Verde but had no idea what to expect...wowww! The Alvarinho region is in the north of Portugal in Monção Melgaço subregion. We headed to the most famous producer of Alvarinho in Portugal and had a tasting with the owner/winemaker himself...a treat! Amazing wines and good conversation. Lunch was the highlight, with typical minhota food, hearty meal with soul. Maria was a great guide...she is so passionate about food and wine, she is a great travel companion. I will definetly recommend.

We were very lucky as my wife and I were the only ones booked for the tour. From the moment we learned this we knew we were in for a treat. Ricardo was exceptional in his knowledge of Porto and its history. We had read about Lisbon but Ricardo made us love Porto. He led us through the streets of Porto and told us story after story! It was like taking a university course. He answered all of our questions and pointed out special places to eat. We could have not asked for more. We are in our 50s and the walk was not difficult. If you want to REALLY learn about Porto you must take this tour! Thank you Ricardo, it is you who made Porto our favourite stop in Portugal.
