10 Food Tours in Bratislava That You Shouldn't Miss

November 6, 2021 Jeremy Dunfee

Stare Mesto, the Old Town of Slovakia's capital, whisks visitors back a few centuries as they wander cobblestone streets, admire the Baroque architecture, enjoy summer and Christmas concerts at Old Town Hall and while away time at cafes and restaurants. Venture beyond for more sites, including the 15th-century hrad (castle) with its treasury and history and music museums, the Slovak National Theater and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Slovak National Gallery, housed in an 18th-century palace.

Getting to know more about the coronation era was a highlight for me. Afterwards she gave us advice what else we could do in Bratislava. With our lovely and knowledgeable guide Daniela the two hours were flying by. Thank you.

This food tour truly made us understand the Slovak culture. Linda was our fun and enthusiastic guide, who navigated superbly with our respective food allergies and gave us a wonderful introduction to the Slovak kitchen. It made it much easier for us to order dishes in restaurants afterwards and it was fun to hear about the local Christmas and New Year traditions and taste the local version of coca cola - Kofola. Until this trip we never realized that the spice paprika is a Hungarian invention using the imported peppers, and that we in Denmark have food that we prepare similarly to some of the Slovak foods, and also many new dishes. We highly recommend to go on this trip for a cultural and fun experience.

We were very much looking forward to this. I sent a message to the operator about a week before the tour to confirm the exact location, no response. 24 hours before the tour I sent a message, no response. On the day of the tour I tried email, text, and a call without response. I called Trip Advisor and they did not respond to the rep on the phone. My money was refunded, but that does not replace the lost experience and it was then too late to book something in its place. I would avoid this if I was you.

We’d booked this tour with Costco as we had had good luck with their service on previous cruises—and they did not disappoint. Our guide, Jolanta Car, was waiting at the bottom of the gangplank with a sign. There were three of us + Jolanta. We walked to her car and began the hour and 15 minute drive into Istria. Jolanta speaks perfect english and carried on a running conversation all the way to the first stop: a little farm restaurant out in the hills. After a brief wait for the members of another tour (which arrived by bus), we had a light lunch with wine and could see Motovun—an old tiny town built on top of a mountain. That was our second stop. Jolanta parked the car and we started up the hill. My wife had recent surgery and chose not to make the walk, and waited in the car. The three of us walked to the top and Jolanta purchased tickets to walk around the wall, as well as a cappucino. We spent about a half-hour there, then walked back to the car and continued to a small distillery, where the owner provided an overview of their processing and provided free samples. Very informative. We returned to the ship on time. It was a wonderfult time and we felt like we had gained a new friend. As we left here, my wife asked if she had a card—she does and owns her own tour company ([email protected]). When we got back to the ship, my wife wondered if Yolanta could set up a private tour in Dubrovnik. We had not as it was supposed to rain—but perhaps a private tour could work. 45 minutes later, we had a tour and a deal. The Dubrovnik tour was also excellent and we recommend Jolanta without reservation.
