Located within the New Forest National Park, Hurst Castle is situated on the seaward end of the shingle spit that extends 1.5 miles from Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire. Built by Henry VIII as a chain of fortresses to protect the Solent in 1544, this is the site where Charles I was imprisoned in 1648 before being taken to his trial and execution in London. The castle was modernised during the Napoleonic wars and again in the 1870s when the enormous armoured wings were added, making it the largest coastal fort in the world. Two of the huge 38-ton guns installed in the 1870s can be viewed in their casemates together with other weapons developed through 412 years of military use. During World War II, Hurst was manned with coastal gun batteries and searchlights. You can get to Hurst Castle by ferry from Keyhaven Quay (sat nav postcode: SO41 0TP) or you can walk along the shingle Hurst Spit. The castle is currently closed, however refreshments are available from outside the castle.
Our visit to Hurst Castle was definitely a highlight of our trip to the New Forest, probably second only to a particularly great tree at Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. We had a very enjoyable mooch around (tudor castle to the left, tea room to the right) learning about the history (built by Henry VIII, King Charles I was a prisoner there) and enjoying the views from the top. Room 8 is definitely worth a visit. Excellent lighting.

Red Funnel has a proud history of serving the Isle of Wight since 1820, carrying 3.4 million passengers to the Island each year. We have won awards for safety, innovation & service including Certificates of Excellence from Trip Advisor every year since 2013. Choose between two stunning routes: our Southampton-East Cowes (former home of Queen Victoria) service takes 1 hour, operates 365 days/year and carries vehicles & passengers. On board, enjoy free Wi-Fi, hot & cold food, a bar & coffee shops, or upgrade to the Signature Lounge, for a quieter club class experience. Our 2nd route connects Southampton to the world-famous yacht racing town of West Cowes. Our modern ‘Red Jet’ Hi-Speed catamarans take just 23 min to cross the Solent. Our entire fleet is dog friendly. Look to us for expert travel advice, accommodation bookings, attraction & event tickets. The opening times displayed are our Contact Centre hours.
Worth paying for the signature lounge with COVID-19 restrictions and the priorty boarding ( this can prove helpful if the ferry timetable gets delayed) All the staff were very helpful and welcoming. The crossings were calm and dry so we were delighted with our trip. Both Southampton and East Cowes have holding space for cars if you are early for your booking.

Wightlink is the leading cross-Solent ferry operator carrying almost five million holidaymakers and Islanders to the Isle of Wight every year. We provide a vehicle and foot passenger ferry service from Lymington, a charming market town in the New Forest, to Yarmouth, a gorgeous historic town in the west of the Isle of Wight. Lymington to Yarmouth is our quickest and most scenic route for car passengers, with a crossing time of only 40 minutes. Facilities in both ports include a Costa Coffee serving drinks, rapid charging points (50kwh) for electric vehicles, ticket office, toilets and baby-changing facilities. Car parking and bicycle racks is also available. Three of our Wight Class ships serve this route. Whether travelling by foot or car, Wightlink’s modern, comfortable fleet provide spacious passenger lounges, sun decks to see the sights of the Solent, excellent food and drink options and easy to access facilities. Wightlink offers frequent sailings all year round.
Travelled from Lymington to Yarmouth and back, pleasant and helpful check in staff at both terminals, well organised boarding procedures on both journeys. On the outward journey we couldn't hear the safety briefing as there was a party of extremely noisy and highly excitable school children on our deck! On the return we were aware that our ferry had slowed down and the captain announced that we were awaiting the other ferry to clear the ship channel before we could enter. the delay was minimal and disembarking was carried out in an orderly manner and in no time we were off the ferry and on our way..Considering these ferries have a very quick turnaround time we were impressed by how clean the tables were, no rubbish laying around. The great bonus for us was that Lymington to Yarmouth is only a 40 minute journey, although we tended to get to the ferry terminal an hour before sailing to ensure that we were near the front of the queue for boarding and therefore hopefully near the front of the queue for disembarkation. When we next travel to the Island we will certainly look to travel with Wightlink again.

Sail with Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth, Poole or Plymouth direct to France and Spain. Our routes take you closer to popular holiday destinations, saving miles of driving, fuel costs, tolls and overnight stops. Choose either superb comfort of a cruise ferry, no-frills economie service or speed across The Channel on our fast craft.
PORTSMOUTH TO ST MALO (12hrs) This was my first experience staying overnight on a ferry and taking a car on, and the process was smooth and problem free from start to finish. Booked our tickets online with ease and received vital information nearer to our departure date. We were guided through the check in and customs easily by the staff on the ground at the ferry terminal in Portsmouth. We booked a 2-berth cabin for the night which was clean, nicely presented and perfect sleeping quarters for the night. It was all really nifty and exciting to be honest, and despite our crossing being a bit rough, we slept fine. Lots of different restaurants to dine in, catering to different prices and taste. WiFi could be access in public areas and worked fine. Staff onboard were very polite and friendly. Access to get on deck and taste the salty sea breeze (and get your bollocks frozen off!) was easy and we even saw one young woman jogging on the top deck as we set sail. I could go on and on. Safe to say that Brittany Ferries gets a glowing reference from me.

This is a quick and easy way to get to Eastney ... connects with the bus service for onward journeying to Southsea/Portsmouth if needed. Friendly, helpful staff. Covered area for rainy days (absolutely pouring on the day I needed to use it) which was dry and warm .... lots of room for bikes in nicer weather :)

Wightlink is the leading cross-Solent ferry operator carrying almost five million holidaymakers and Islanders to the Isle of Wight every year. We provide a FastCat foot passenger ferry service from Portsmouth Harbour Railway Station, to Ryde Pier Head, a beautiful seaside town on the north-east coast of the Island, with Island Line trains running directly to and from the pier. Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head is our quickest route with a crossing time of 22 minutes, thanks to our high-speed catamarans, Wight Ryder I & II. Facilities in both ports include a Costa Coffee serving hot and cold food and drinks, ticket office, toilets and baby-changing facilities. Car parking on Ryde Pier Head is available and bicycle racks are also available at both ports. Wightlink’s modern, comfortable catamarans provide spacious passenger lounges, sun decks to see the sights of the Solent and easy to access facilities. Wightlink offers frequent sailings all year round.
We use this a couple of times per year for either a day trip or for a couple of nights stay as it is very easy access direct from the Gosport Ferry. It takes 22 minutes to cross and the views from the top deck in nice weather are great. We like the 10 minute stroll down the pier at Ryde and then stop for a great cup of hot chocolate in a local venue. We always thought it was the dearest water crossing in the world but were told this trip that is actually the fourth, well beaten by the Hayling Ferry and the Hovercraft. The staff are amazingly friendly and helpful and being able to get either 'Recycled Teenager' or Forces discounts makes it very reasonable.

We provide a vehicle and foot passenger ferry service from Portsmouth, one of Britain’s most vibrant port cities with excellent travel connections, to Fishbourne, conveniently located for anyone visiting the Isle of Wight. Portsmouth to Fishbourne is our most popular route. Facilities in both ports include a customer building serving hot and cold food and drinks, rapid charging points (50kwh) for electric vehicles, two-tier boarding for efficient loading and unloading of vehicles, ticket office, toilets and baby-changing facilities. Car parking and bicycle racks are also available. The crossing takes 45 minutes, using several of our vessels to serve the route, including our new hybrid energy powered flagship, Victoria of Wight.
As first time visitor is to the Isle of Wight, we were very impressed with how well connected the buses, trains and ferries are linked to make a trip to the island an easy experience for foot and car passengers. Exactly on time despite storm Dennis starting to get involved and very friendly staff. Very clean, well facilitated and comfortable.

We travelled Poole to St Helier on Liberation and back to Portsmouth on Clipper. Both trips went smoothly from start to end. Thought that Condor have taken a very sensible and rigorous approach to social distancing and all staff and passengers were adhering to spacing and mask wearing. Lovely superior cabin en route Jersey to Portsmouth. Clean, comfortable and breakfast brought to the cabin (limited menu - porridge would have been nice, but at 5.15am not really a top priority for us!). Parking handled well (we had bikes on the back and booked for 6m vehicle - don't forget to check your vehicle length if you are planning a bike rack).
