Grandma Dee's Sauvie Island Blueberry Farm

Reviewed By yonghan001 - Pompano Beach, United States

On a sunny day in mid August, I decided to take a fun drive to Sauvie Island. It is the time of the year when many berry farms there are offering U-pick option for the fruit lovers as well as fun-seekers, usually moms with little ones. I was very delighted to arrived at Dee’s Sauvie Island Berry Farm where it is primarily a blueberry farm. Dee Parson, the owner of the farm, is a 86 years old lady who welcomed me and told me the history of the farm and where I can pick those berries. Perhaps most of us in the United States have already known the taste of blueberries. For me though, these berries are very different: they are so sweet and juicy. With a light layer of white film on each berry as if they are having a sweet frost on each candy. Grandma Dee told me that they only use water to nurture these berries but I can see the hard labor she had put into this farm from the well managed land and thoughtfully trimmed plants. Grandma Dee’s place does not have any fancy equipment or the latest technology to support her operations, however, you will find the true honest and trust in her devotion of taking care her plants. The results are those sweetest blueberries on this enchanted island.

I could go on about how much I love Krugers. First of all, it's only a 15-20 minute drive from NW Portland, so it's always a great escape from the city. In the summer they have u-pick berry picking and a full veggie market on the property where you can also order beer/wine and hang out. In the fall, they do an amazing corn maze. After buying your tickets, you walk into the corn field a bit and in the middle they have a circus tent set up with live music, fire pits, smores, food, beer, wine, and a fire dancer performance. Then you go into the maze at your scheduled time and it pops you back out at the party.

Coming from Florida, this was my very first time visiting Sauvie Island - it reminded me of the old world: very kind and thoughtful people, very clean water and air of the countryside. Here in the late summer during the u-pick season for all kinds of berries, one can taste perhaps the most delicious berries on earth - Chester Blackberry, Blueberry, and many other kinds. I saw moms with litter ones picking berries and their facial expressions tell all - fun and happy - why not: who can resist such wonderful and sweet moments: surrounding yourselves with the ones you love while tasting the best berries! Life on this island seems to be very simple and yet people here are working hard to provide for their families. Growing fruits these days are not really making a ton of money. However, these folks love what they are doing and preserve this good earth so that many of us can enjoy. This is truly a place one can have a great time both in body and mind.

What a lovely way to spend an afternoon! We had one adult who had never been on a horse, two teenagers with moderate riding experience, and another adult who had not ridden in many years. Stuart, and dog Boo Boo, were wonderful. We were matched with an appropriate horse and then taken on a lovely walk along rolling hills and through the trees and back around to the barn. This is a great family outing and would be a wonderful place for first time and young riders. Stuart also provides Equine Therapy for help with mental health issues. There is an indoor arena as well for rainy days.
