10 Farmhouses in Northern Portugal: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 28, 2023 Hector Krause

Brimming with both history and natural wonder, Northern Portugal is home to Porto, the city that gave the country its name, as well as the important ancient town of Braga. Also here is Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park, a gorgeous wilderness area of mountains, gorges, water features and wildlife. Many picturesque villages and manor houses dot the countryside. Two areas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alto Douro Wine Region, and the Paleolithic rock art in the Côa Valley.

Authentic Portugal lives on at Casa da Trigueira

Reviewed By IHeartPuglia

If you want to see and feel the "real" Portugal, stay here. This is a small home in a tiny burg of about 300 people. The streets are cobblestone and the homes are made of stone. The road thru town is the width of a wagon, and there's one place in town that served us magnificent (and generous portions) of Portuguese cuisine -- $25 for 2 with wine and dessert. Amazing. The casa is owned by a loving host family. Antonio, the the owner, took care of our entire stay in the Douro -- arranging a boat trip, port tasting and providing insider expertise on where to go (or not go). He is incredibly friendly and helpful despite limited English (thank heavens for Google translate!). It's about 20 minutes or so from Pinhao on the windy road that provides spectacular views. The landscape around the town is spectacular -- vineyards and olives as far as the eye can see. There are two relatively flat hiking trails that go thru town, including a 4 KM circular route. The photos in the autumn look amazing. The rooms are simple but nice; we had the big one with large bathroom on the first floor that had its own porch. Lovely linens and super clean. WiFi provided. This was the highlight of our 2 week trip of Portugal and we recommend it highly!

Good in general but manager was very unprofessional

Reviewed By Matias N

We were there for 3 days and our room was quite moist and smelly. I asked the manager and she replied very unprofessional in my opinion. Her response was quite aggressive, that they don't have other rooms. I expected at least that she would show interest and check it out the room. This is the main reason for the bad review. Breakfast was very basic. Staff was otherwise friendly. Only 1 of them knew English, which made it a bit difficult to communicate.

Cute and cosy

Reviewed By criochi

Perfect place for couples. The owners are extremely nice and accommodating. There’s dogs and cats around, but they’re no nuisance at all. There’s restaurantes a short drive distance, however I would recommend eat the traditional food on the terrace so you can enjoy the sunset. The food is topical Portuguese food and really tasty. The pool is natural / ecologic with an area reserved for water plants.

An outstanding place to stay highly recommend

This place is a real gem of a place what a find. It sits in an elevated position with great views over the village. The rooms are superb, well appointed quite and well just great. they were very clean and very comfortable with excellent bathrooms. its just on the cusp of hotel/ guest house. It has a games room and a tv room as well. there is also a bathing pool which if fed by a natural spring which is great to relax in at the end of the day. It has secure parking and we were free to roam the garden and to help our selves to the fruit which was growing in it. the hosts were outstanding. Just a note to say the drinking water out of the taps was the best I had in the whole of our holiday, so top up your water bottles before you leave. Breakfast was good no problems there. The only draw back we could find was no on site evening meal however at the top of the village on the opposite side of the valley is a great eating place, with great views and is well frequented by the locals and is well worth the effort.

Great Place to Stay to Visit the Passadicos

Reviewed By RobRxxx

We (3 couples) stayed here to be near the Passadicos do Paiva (8km). The accommodations in the Casa were lovely, as is the town, Alvarenga. The house is beautifully decorated with comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces to sit. While there is no breakfast, the Cafe Brasileira around the corner, provided everything including sandwiches, breakfast, ice cream, wine and beer - all at inexpensive prices. The Casa itself is an old stone structure. The Town is just charming, worth staying in. I would recommend staying here to anyone. While no English was spoken, it was not a problem. We had stopped at the tourist office in Arouca, on our way in, and this is a good stop to get information on the area. We also had a good steak dinner at the restaurant on the right as you leave the "downtown". The only downside is that it was a little hard to find.

Beautiful B&B to explore the Porto - Braga region

Reviewed By NicolleV

We enjoyed a great stay at this beautiful small hotel/ B&B. A few years ago part of the family house has been rebuild to very specious and beautil rooms, a breakfast/ liviving room and a lovely little terras/garden. Extra note on the delicious breakfast, the leite creme, made bij the owner Paula by the tradional family recipe and from her own cows. This is definitely a place where we will return to in the future.
