With beaches, boating, and salmon fishing in Michigan City and Gary bordering Lake Michigan, there is more to Indiana than might appear at first glance. The agricultural heartland even has cross country skiing and snowmobiling to go with the Cornball Express. Southwest Indiana near Evansville is renowned for the well-preserved Native American Angel Mounds State Historic Site. The largest city and state capital is famous worldwide for its Indianapolis 500 race. Even locals living in the suburbs often overlook the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Eiteljorg Museum, NCAA Hall of Champions, the old Union Station museum cluster, and downtown Canal Walk, to name but a few landmarks. South Bend is synonymous with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Forested Nashville’s art colony fame dates to the early 1900s when Impressionist Theodore Clement Steele overwintered in The House of the Singing Winds. It is now the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. We decided to stop in after a visit to Blue Springs Caverns, and glad we did! Picked up some amazing produce...cucumbers, peppers, green beans, corn on the cob, and cantaloupe (just like grandpa used to grow...so sweet!) Loved that they offer popcorn and cider as you enter. Nice touch. We also bought caramel apples, sesame sticks, a variety of homemade breads (cinnamon bread great for toasting), and the cinnamon rolls were so soft and delicious warmed up! Took home some pumpkin butter, strawberry-rhubarb preserves, and blackberry butter...all very good, can’t pick a favorite. One unexpected find was their pickle barrel! We bought one to share/sample, and ended up buying 6 more. Wish they were closer so we could get more!! Will definitely stop back in when in area.

Purple Porch Co-op is a food co-op in the East Bank of Downtown South Bend. We are a small grocery store that features local and organic foods - including fresh produce, dry goods, bulk foods dairy and meats (and more!). We also have a cafe ("Cafe Max") that offers made-from-scratch soups, salad, sandwiches, baked goods, hot coffee, etc - all with local and/or organic ingredients. Stop by on a Wednesday evening 5-7pm where you'll find our farmers market with producers that offer all local foods. A great opportunity to meet with the farmers and learn about how they grew/produced the food you're about to eat. While we are Member-owners supported, we are very much open to all.
