Watonga Cheese Factory was founded in 1940 in Watonga, Oklahoma. It was purchased in 2002 by Casey and Brandi Cowan. Then in 2007 tragedy struck when a tropical storm brought 80-mile-an-hour winds and 9 to 11 inches of rain and the factory was destroyed. The City of Perryton, Texas offered incentives to the Cowans to rebuild there and the factory was re-opened in 2010. Voted the “Best Cheese in Texas” in 2014, Watonga Cheese Factory still uses the same recipe and the same equipment that makes them stand out from the rest, and prides itself in its 70-year tradition to produce rich, handmade cheddar cheese full of flavor. In addition to producing all-natural cheddar cheese at it's location, the factory has a retail store where you can buy its mild cheddar, sharp cheddar in a variety of flavors. It also sells cheese curds. Cheese Factory tours are fun and educational. Scheduled by appointment, they are a great attraction as a family vacation activity or for a school field trips.

While staying in McAllen we shopped several times at the Rio Grande Valley Outlets in Mercedes because it was near by. The prices were better than at the same stores in McAllen and there was a very good variety of stores to shop. Plenty of food vendors to eat at as well. The outlets were easy to get around in and very pleasant layout. We really enjoyed shopping there and would recommend it.

Leave your man at home and take a friend with you. This time I went with a girlfriend. What a great day it was. 5 hours shopping went so quick. Shops open 11am-7pm Mon-Sat. Sunday 12pm-6pm. A lot of nice shops there. Armani, Hugo Boss, Coach, Kate Spade, GAP, Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas just to name a few. If you’re hungry, there is a food court, Starbucks, Auntie Anne, food stalls and other cafes around. Plenty of restrooms available too. Parking was easy. Get a map of the outlet on your phone so you know where you are going.

Great shopping, this has been my family’s go-to spot since we arrived in 2004. The shops have changed a lot - notably the construction of all the new shops in the center of what used to be the parking lot. To accommodate the additional traffic and visitors (from a growing population, not to mention tour groups from Asia and Europe), the developer built a large parking lot to the north of the shops, complete with a traffic circle to help keep traffic flowing smoothly. Couple of tips: #1 Follow all traffic signs. The driveways leading into the shopping area do not have stop signs - traffic flowing INTO the center is supposed to continue moving forward, so as not to back up traffic onto Stacy Road or Chelsea Blvd., but drivers invariably stop to let others go. While noble, it’s really messing up the traffic flow and adds to the aggravation of other drivers in the vicinity. #2 Use the north lot for parking and walk a bit further to your destination. I can almost guarantee that it will be worth your while and save you a headache and frustration of finding a spot near your favorite store. My kids and I will regularly park in the north lot and walk south all the way to Vans and Converse on the southern-most end of the shopping center and it ALWAYS takes less time to do this than try to fight the traffic. #3 If you come hungry, the outlets have you covered - in the past few years, they added a Burger IM and Starbucks because hangry shoppers just aren’t a good thing. Just outside the outlets is a Liberty Burger, Quiznos, Taco Cabana and a few other restaurants. They’re not too far from the outlets PLUS if you parked in the north lot, you get to burn a few more calories! #4 If you can visit mid-week, it may be your best bet. Weekends and shopping holidays are a nightmare, but if that’s your thing, then go for it. I figure the shopping must be really good since I regularly saw tourist groups from Asia and Europe all shopping at the center, all carrying their bags and piling back into large tour buses. The tourists usually visit mid-week, just after most stores receive and stock their new inventory (Wednesdays are good).
