The Golden Plains festival is one of the most organic, non-intrusive festivals in Australia. Located about 90km from Melbourne CBD on a farm in rural Victoria, the festival is a haven for seekers and music lovers where there are very few rules. You can bring your own alcohol, you can take your own couch and you can dress up, or un-dress as little or as much as you want. There is a huge natural amphitheatre where all the musicians perform. A fantastic Pink Flamingo bar specialises in only 2 types of cocktails and an atmosphere of camaraderie, humanity and "chill out vibes" abounds. Tickets can only be bought via a ballot process if you are a subscriber. The festival is held for 3 days during the Labour Day weekend in Victoria.

Rochester runs a mural festival each year at the end of February. Eight artists, over seven days paint a 2x4.8 metre artwork in the Mural Park near the Northern Highway. Prizes are given the artists who have been judged to have painted the best murals. The completed murals, and all past winners of the event are able to be viewed at any time during the year.
Well worth visiting especially if you can get there in February. We’ve been a few times and loved watching the artists at work and talking to them. Next festival is 22-29 Feb 2020. The artists ‘paint off’ 8am-5pm. We watched each mural’s daily progress. Art show and display & Devonshire tea in the (thankfully air conditioned) Old Court House opposite the park. The eight murals plus previous winners remain on display all year round and you can spot some around the town too. You can buy the mini murals and the large murals.

Second time to AO, and just as impressed. What a great event in a great city. The free tram in the city centre, the extra trams to ensure visitors can get to/from the venue makes it easy. Add in the extras that Melbourne brings - when we were there it was a One Day International in cricket between Aussie and India at the MCG - so cool! Then a football game (soccer to Aussies) between Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix at AAMI. So AO, MCG and AAMI all within same park.....way to go Melbourne. Huge selection of restaurants of all price points and types - we enjoyed Vietnamese, Indian and Italian, plus snacks from all around the world. Great one week destination for a big event. Venture out to Yarra Valley or Mornington for food, fruit, wine, chocolate etc.....

Long before you arrive, the distant sound of engines screaming will entice you into this iconic Australian event. Be prepared for lots of noise, action, and Australian’s being, well, Australian! This weekend in March brings all of the excitement you would expect when you mix Aussies, fast cars, and abundantly flowing beer. Opt for a luxury VIP experience, or hit the grandstands for a truly authentic experience. While you are there, take the energy of the day into the night and hit up one of the after-parties to enjoy the unique flavor that Melbourne has to offer.
The Australian Grand Prix is usually held in March, making it the first Grand Prix of the season. This year, it will probably be held in November 2021. As last year's Grand Prix was cancelled, let's hope that the corona virus situation is under control by November. It's understood that the teams are seeking clarification of scheduling.

There’s no place like Flemington – the beating heart of Australian horse racing and home to the world’s most vibrant racing event, the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival. Glamourous, refined and full of history, the Melbourne Cup Carnival creates a celebratory atmosphere unparalleled by any other Australian major event and combines the very best of what Melbourne has to offer – food, wine, sport, business, celebrity and fashion. It’s a place where records are broken, history is made and offers an experience like no other.
Travelled down for the Melbourne Cup this year and had an amazing day. Best people watching day ever, in between races of course. Didn't end up rich in money, but definately rich in experience. Saw some magnificent outfits. Still don't know how some of the race goers wear the heels that they do. As everyone says, a must do for the bucket list! Got on the rail for the big race in a great spot not far from the finish line. Big day, big crowd and even bigger atmosphere. Melbourne public transport system also needs the nod, along with all their pleasant and helpful staff.

The City of Melbourne puts on a spectacular free NYE for the whole family. The entertainment starts at 6pm at Yarra Park where kids can enjoy entertainment, rides, games and be spellbound by the fireworks display at 9.00 pm. Because the Melbourne skyline is visible from many places around the city, people organise rooftop parties, dinner with friends or simply settle in front of one of the 4 stages that the City of Melbourne sets up with music, facilities and food stalls: King Domain, the Treasury Gardens, the Flagstaff Gardens or the Docklands. Those events are alcohol free.
The highlight of New Year's Eve in Melbourne is the fireworks. The fireworks cover the whole of the CBD. Good places to watch include Federation Square, Southbank and the waterfront. The fireworks seem to get better every year. If you are looking for somewhere with a bit of class, the Eureka Skydeck has a New Year's party with refreshments provided. Plus, it's hard to get a better view of the fireworks. The celebrations in Federation Square cater for children; there's a free concert and the celebrations start early and finish early. Flinders Street Station is just across the road.
