10 Day Trips from in Faro That You Shouldn't Miss

January 30, 2022 Roger Rusk

Faro is the best-known city in Portugal’s deservedly famous Algarve region. There’s an archaeological museum and a “Bishops’ Palace,” a Renaissance cathedral that was heavily bombed during World War II, but later rebuilt. Nearby in Estoi are Roman ruins, and Albufeira, also nearby, is a formerly quaint fishing village influenced by the Moors in the 8th century. It’s situated in a cliffside location, and has become famous for its beaches (there are 20) and nightlife.

Very well organized. Easy walking in low lying coastal Algarve, staying in the same hotel throughout. We enjoyed having the same driver, Antonio, for airport transfers and journeys to the start of daily walks. A suggestion for us Americans - if you included miles along with km.

Gabriel is lovely, he kept in touch in the run up to pick up which was at our hotel in Albufeira, He is an excellent guide and knows a lot about the area and history, He understood what we liked and showed us areas where we could photograph and enjoy, We enjoyed lunch in a little cafe in Tavira with a local sandwich and beer, He even stopped off at home and grabbed us a few oranges from his families orange trees, If you want a tour with someone who is friendly, reliable and knows Portugal then Gabriel is your man

Given the inclusions, I had it in my head that this was meant to be a boat trip, but despite my misunderstanding, it was well worth it! We were picked up from a central spot in Faro, where everyone was provided with hand-sanitiser and instructed to wear masks for the duration of our drive. On arrival at the caves, we were told that conditions weren't great, but our instructor was happy for us to try an bodyboard inside if we felt comfortable enough. I'm glad we all gave it a go because we were the only tour that had been granted access which made for an even better experience once we were inside! Be warned, it was a bit of an effort to beat the waves and get into open water before we could venture across, but our guide made it really easy for us and kept us relaxed, helping us arrive as safely as possible one-by-one. He even brought all of our phones across in a sealed pack so we could take photos once we'd arrived. We each had our own life-jacket, body-board and flippers to make it even easier. The second drop-off was a beautiful beach just up the road and was a nice bonus! The guides were really helpful and understanding of our needs and were happy enough to drop us off at a different beach of our choosing instead of back in Faro (though we did have to pay extra).

The tour delivered exactly what it offered. Pick-up from our hotel was on time. The tour guide offered some information about the area and Loulé itself while driving to town. That being said, the market was a bit underwhelming. I had hoped to see more artisan stalls and handicrafts. Overall, I am glad to have taken a tour to see a bit of a different sight of the Algarve.
