10 Cultural Tours in Mostar That You Shouldn't Miss

April 22, 2022 Matilde Konrad

Mostar (Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [mǒstaːr]) is a city and municipality in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Inhabited by 105,797 people, it is the most important city in the Herzegovina region, its cultural capital, and the center of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.

The Death of Yugoslavia is award-winning tour featuring the complete timeline of the nation's birth and death. By visiting three locations, we explore Yugoslavia during the Cold War, directly between the nuclear missiles of both Warsaw and the NATO pact. We explore Tito and how his actions led to the formation of a prosperous non-aligned country. We explore the rise of nationalism after the fall of Communism. And finally, we witness the Yugoslavian War. All of this will be seen among these locations, unwilling monuments to the existence of a country which died more than 20 years ago but is still alive in the minds of its former citizens.

Inclusions: All taxes, fees and handling charges, Local taxes, Driver/guide

The parish of Medjugorje is situated in Herzegovina, 25 km southwest of Mostar. Medjugorje, (the name is of Slavic origin, and signifies a region between two mounts) with villages of Bijakovići, Vionica, Miletina and Šurmanci, forms a Roman-Catholic paris where today about 5000 inhabitants live. The pastoral cars of the paris is confided to the priests of the Herzegovinian Franciscan Province of the Assumptions of Mary. The whole region is inhabited by Croats (Bosnian Croats) who received Christianity 13 centuries ago. In historical documents, the village was mentioned in 1599 for the first time. The persent parish was founded in 1892, and dedicated to St.James the Apostole, protector of pilgirms. Until June 24, 1981, Medjugorje lived like all other villages of this region: people worked on their land, planted tobacco and vineyards, produced wine and vegetables to acquire just enough for modest life for their families.

Nice guy (representing “Now Bosnia”), well informed and well presented. Good tour around the old town but perhaps lacking in historical data. He answered all our questions but was more interested in us and used us as a sounding board for his business plans.

My 18 year old daughter and I had the privilege of spending an afternoon with Vedad on the Bosnian War tour. We were so very impressed with Vedad's ability to remain objective despite personal lived experience as a young child in the war. He shared some personal stories, spoke about the history of the region as well as the current political state, and expressed hope for the future. He was incredibly knowledgeable and invited questions and dialogue. This tour advanced my perspective and I am truly grateful for the gifts Vedad gave through his passion, humanity, and hope. Best to you as always Vedad...K and A

We went on a walking tour with Emir, “Experience with Local, feel like a local”. We didn’t go to one museum or church/mosque and didn’t even go to the old bridge, but feel like we know the city, understand the history and what the people think, do and want. Emir’s sharing of his family’s personal experiences during the Last War were stirring and helped us understand what the city and its people went through. Emir greeted and introduced us to many of his friends as we toured the city and we had coffee at his neighborhood cafe/bar. We highly recommend this walking tour with Emir if he’s available.
