10 Cultural Tours in Midi-Pyrénées That You Shouldn't Miss

May 14, 2022 Margarita Chappel

Stretching from the wooded Dordogne to the towering peaks of the Pyrenees, this vast region is a popular winter sports destination, but one without the hordes that besiege the Alps. Spring's melted snows lure kayakers and rafting enthusiasts. In summer, amateur and advanced hikers take to the hills.

I had the most marvelous experience with Veronique Hery in Aveyron, France. First of all, she is a marvelous and accommodating hostess. She is also extremely knowledgeable about so many places, things, and people in her location. Her house is a newly remodeled home originally built in 1930 (recently by French standards). Veronique is totally bilingual. She is very caring to her house guest. Lots of FUN to be with, and gives space as needed. I wholeheartedly recommend her as your guide. The area of and near Aveyron is little known by outsiders, yet it is beautiful and historic. Rolling hills, 12th century hilltop villages, historic city of Albi, a great but undiscovered wine region called Marcillac, and Veronique as your guide. A great way to spend a week, or more. The only downside is it's a bit harder to get to the Rodez area than most other parts of France, but it's well worth the small extra hassle.

Me and a friend decided to visit Bicester Village in Oxfordshire for a little guilty pleasure shopping day, we decided that Bicester Village would be the ideal place as it housed some of our favourite brands excluding Louis Vuitton (sad face), and generally it makes a good day out. On this occasion we decided to book via Trip Advisor and take the luxury coach experience over car or train. The coach booking was very easy and convenient to do, once the date was selected the time and location (Victoria Coach stn situated on Buckingham Palace Rd) provided a convenient and hassle free booking arrangement. The coach was nicely designed with the Bicester logo and text so easily recognisable on arrival, the driver was really helpful and friendly when assisting me to direct my friend to the pick up point. The only negative for us, is we didn't realise that the coach would stop off at various hotel locations in central London to fill the coach prior to departure to Bicester Village itself, we personally thought this wasted time and would find driving their a better option on the next visit. The village was as nice, as I remembered it, we found that not all the boutiques took the 10% discount on offer with this coach trip. However the village was offering some great savings, so we decided that wasn't a major problem. We were asked to get back to the coach point for a 5pm departure, before we boarded to head home, this service provided free tea, coffee and water which was a really nice touch to sip something warm whilst enjoying the coach trip home, with our new designer purchases. The only one major disappointment was we decided to dine at Shan Shui, which personally I found the food to be really delicious, however my friend being a vegetarian found chicken within her vegetarian rice dish, which was a major disappointment. The dish was taken and another offered to replace the first dish, but the issue with the chicken being in the dish in the first instance was off putting, therefore a replacement dish was not excepted. Management were very sincere with an apology in regards to the situation, personally I would dine there again, however, vegetarians may want to take the menu into special consideration if choosing this venue as a dining option. My closing advice, visit when you can, as I'll be going back next year (2020) by car!

Cathy gave us exactly what we requested and more in our visit to Lourdes. For non French speakers or those with a limited ability to speak French, Cathy is fabulous. She is knowledgeable in the local history and was wonderful helping my disabled husband access the baths and sights of the Lourdes Shrine. She knows how to help bypass all the tourist lines for those who cannot stand in line. She arranged for all travel for us even during one of the busiest times. She treated us like friends or family, not customers. In a word, she is wonderful, the best tour guide we have ever had.

We spent a week with James McDonald and 6 other travellers exploring the Cathar Country and learning about who these incredible people were. James is an absolute font of knowledge about everything to do with the life and demise of these fascinating people. We travelled to Toulouse where we started off on an incredible adventure. A city tour for introduction a fabulous lunch in the old square. From here we met Alison our driver / guide and travelled to Quillan in a very nice bus. A charming little town full of nice restaurants to Hotel La Chaumiere. Lovely rooms excellent restaurant very friendly staff. We averaged 3/4 sites of interest a day interspersed with tutorials from James delicious lunches in small local cafes with excellent food and wine. Day 3 we also went on a wine tour to La Louviere a beautiful vineyard and to Limoux to taste Blanquette de Limoux. The sites of Montsegur, The Abbey of Fontfroide, Puivert, Arques, were compelling even more so with James commentary on every aspect of their place in this Cathar story. We spent a day free in Carcassonne to explore the Cite, Bastide and the beautiful Canal de Midi. We had such a good informative fun trip. Many thanks also for the dinners in Chateau St Ferriol with the McDonald family. I am so pleased that the Story and History of The Cathar people will be carried forward in the safe hands of James McDonald and Cathar Country Tours. Many Thanks James

I had wanted to visit Lourdes ever since I was a child. Our tour guide, Cathy, helped make it an amazing experience. Cathy organized and scheduled the day accommodating the limited time we had since we were arriving from Paris late morning. She finalized plans with us before our arrival to France and I appreciated that she remained connected via email before out arrival in Lourdes. We saw all the locations we expected and never felt rush due to how Cathy arranged the itinerary. Cathy has an incredible wealth of knowledge and it's clear she thoroughly enjoys sharing it.

This is an English Language Tour. Visiting Toulouse? Want to know what there is to do, to see? These are the questions I'll answer for you on this Tour. Salted with history and peppered with anecdotes, taking this Tour will not only make you feel like you posses a figurative "Menu" of what Toulouse has to offer, but that you have already seen the sights and enjoyed a tasty first course. This is an afternoon Tour but the Tour itself is the same as the Free Tour I give on alternating mornings and carries the same name. Unlike the Free Tour this Tour has been created for people who don't like the large crowds that can sometimes accompany Free Tours. On this Tour places are limited to a maximum of 15.

Inclusions: I make sure I've got some water and cups for the guests as it can get hot in Toulouse.
