10 Cottages in Scottish Highlands: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 24, 2023 Milan Banda

The moody, romantic Scottish Highlands start at Loch Lomond just north of Glasgow. Comprising a slew of mountain ranges, this sparsely populated land is best seen by train on the West Highland Line. Mountains, lochs, bright heather and rhododendrons give way to white sand beaches and rugged coves as the train nears Mallaig. For a more active take on the region, hike the West Highland Way or visit the Trossachs National Park. Ben Nevis, a popular climbing spot, looms over the town of Fort William.

We had a great time staying in the pods as a base for our winter sports with our young family. It was clean, warm and more spacious than we expected. The cookhouse and showers are close by. We would recommend staying here.

A wonderful and tranquil escape

Reviewed By KRB1988

My partner and I won a weekend away at this delightful lodge, and it more than exceeded our expectations! Gunta was very warm, welcoming and hospitable, so much so that it felt like we were staying with a friend rather than a host, which was lovely. Her two dogs and cat were also very sweet and well behaved, and we quickly felt at home :) The lodge is brilliantly located - you really are in such a peaceful location, and we felt it made a great base from which to explore. The air is fresh, and there is no sound of distant traffic etc; one really is at peace here and away from the hustle and bustle! The room itself was spacious, clean, and very comfortable, with all the amenities one would need: a big bed, TV with Netflix, a fridge (very handy), tea/coffee/biscuits, and many toiletries. We slept very well! The breakfasts were superb and there was lots of choice, and the portions meant that we never left feeling hungry before we set off to explore. As we were new to the area and had limited time, Gunta kindly created a GPS route for us so that we could take a road trip and visit key sites in the area and beyond, such as Dornoch, Dunrobin Castle, and Lairg. She also took us for a wonderful morning walk where we were able to discover the local woodland with her and her lovely dogs. These personal touches meant so much and she is very knowledgeable and passionate; we were able to explore without feeling like we needed to google everything! This was very kind of her and made our trip very memorable; I felt like I actually relaxed and switched-off from work, which I really needed. We would love to visit again (for longer!) and would highly recommend this lodge to anyone wishing to visit this part of Scotland; you will be treated so well and will definitely want to come back. Lovely Stay in the Cottage

Reviewed By thelonebiker

Both my parents and i stayed in the very new Cottage in the grounds of the B and B. Its a 2 bedroom with a toilet and shower with cooking facilities, a small living room, proch, fridge etc. there is also ample parking. We have been frequent visitors to the area for 40 years and I was visiting to do some local cycling. This was the perfect base with lovely comfy beds and living arrangements which would suit couples or families with up to 2 kids. The kitchen facilities were good for cooking but if you are eating out Tain and Portmahomack are short drives away. The only thing I would be looking for is wifi but we were the first ever guests and there is a good 4g signal in the area and the host was working on getting this installed. Really enjoyed my stay and would love to come back with my wife and daughter, especially at the very reasonable price we paid.

Very friendly staff

Reviewed By Girllovestotravel389

We stayed here last June when we explored the NC500 hidden away and feels like it's in the middle of no where. It is a family run business with animals on site and a lovely private loch with a small pier a short walk through the woods which is beautiful in the sunshine (where we ended up getting engaged) this can be enjoyed on rowing boats, oars are available at reception. Accommodation is a little dated but is more of a rustic charm. All utensils sheets etc provided. There is a restraunt and bar on site and a play park for families. Staff are incredibly friendly.

Experiência estranha!

Reviewed By betycrespo

Sandholm 2 Cottage Morar

Reviewed By ianrob2017

Just back from one week stay at Sandhom 2 Cottage Morar. Very enjoyable, fantastic views, great base for seeing the Highlands. Clean and tidy but in my opinion could benefit from some modernisation. Also had a few days rain and cold therefore would have liked to inject some heat into the place however the central heating only came on on the day we left? The instructions for the central heating were clear and followed to the letter however it never came on. Nevertheless we would definitely return to this cottage for its location.

Nice homely stay

Reviewed By Derek-Merc

Greeted at the door by Winnie who looked after us wonderfully until the minute we left. Everywhere was clean and comfortable. Wi-Fi worked well. For some reason the TV refused to show and BBC channels but, nowadays, an evening spent without the BBC is no great loss. All in all it was a bit like having a night away at your gran's and, when I still had them, I used to love staying with my gran!

Excellent experience

Reviewed By Lauren S

This was our favorite place we stayed in all of Scotland! The owners, John and Joan, are the nicest people! The cabin is outfitted with anything you would need (kitchen, wifi, laundry, etc.) and was located on a beautiful plot of land. Our favorite part (aside from talking with the owners) was that their animals lived right outside your cottage windows and would come up to the fence and let you pet them. They had Shetland ponies and two donkeys named Bert and Ernie. We loved our stay at this cottage and would highly recommend it to anyone. You will not find nicer people than the owners of this cabin.
