Just two hours north of London by rail, the city of York holds 1900 years' worth of history in its ancient walls. The Romans built the city in 71 AD, and the Vikings captured it in 866 AD. Stop by the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens for a look at what the Roman and Vikings left behind (they must have packed light when they left). From there, move on to the York Castle Museum for a not-so-quick overview of the most recent 400 years.

The Academy of St Olave's is a chamber orchestra based in York. Players in the Academy come from a wide range of backgrounds including teachers, gifted amateurs, students, talented school children and professional players. The orchestra often chooses a charity to support and audiences have also donated generously to collections held at many of the concerts.

It's just on the edge of the city centre with nearby free parking, It's certainly not a posh or lavish theatre but an excellent community facility offering very good value on tickets, ice creams and sweets. I iunderstand plans are in place to improve these facilities but the basics are here and all very good. With my daughters we watched Maid in Dagenham and by the end of the show the audience were on their feet clapping and thoroughly enjoyed it, what a great atmosphere.

York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in York for 275 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April 2016 following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century

My Mum and I watched Twelfth Night and thought it was absolutely amazing - we loved the quirky Shakespearean theatre and enjoyed watching the actors bring this play to life, in the style that Shakespeare intended. We also enjoyed the jazz club style music in this play, which was unexpected. There is a lovely ‘village’ outside the theatre, with a few food and drink outlets, and picnic tables. There are public loos, although they are on the small side. We had seats in the middle tier, which were very comfortable - you don’t need to bring cushions, unless you are in the Groundlings section. Overall, this was a very special and memorable evening, and we are planning to return again next year.
