10 Classes & Workshops in El Raval That You Shouldn't Miss

October 27, 2021 Florencio Paulino

Barcelona feels a bit surreal – appropriate, since Salvador Dali spent time here and Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed several of the city’s buildings. Stepping into Gaudí’s Church of the Sacred Family is a bit like falling through the looking glass - a journey that you can continue with a visit to Park Güell. Sip sangria at a sidewalk café in Las Ramblas while watching flamboyant street performers, then create your own moveable feast by floating from tapas bar to tapas bar.

bcnKITCHEN is a local cooking school, we are passionate about food and our objective is to share that passion with you! We have two kitchens, one in the charming Born district and the other in the Boqueria market building, all of the ingredients we use come from the market that you will be visiting with our chef. Once you arrive back at our cooking school, wine in one hand apron in the other, it’s time to start cooking! After a couple of hours of action you’ll sit amidst the dishes you have prepared with the satisfaction of having prepared a Spanish feast!

Myself, my teenage daughter and her friend all spent an amazing four hours with Amelia (and 8 others) at BCN Kitchen in El Born cooking a range of Spanish dishes and then having a sit down meal together as a group. We started off with a group trip to the local market which is much more authentic (and reasonably priced!) than La Boqueria and Amelia talked us through how to choose good ingredients, especially fish. Lots of us bought saffron to take home as it is very inexpensive in Spain and some of us bought local cheeses and meats as well (vacuum-packed means they don't have to be refrigerated). When we returned to BCN kitchen, everyone got involved in the slicing, dicing and cooking and Amelia was very good at ensuring we all had jobs to do. No one stood around bored and every step of the cooking process was explained for each of the dishes (we will be emailed the recipes later). Although one might imagine chaos with 11 of us in the kitchen, it was a smooth operation in a spacious area and everyone in the group (singles, couples and families ranging in age from 11-about 55) was friendly and very social. Wine and water were provided and added to the congenial environment. We prepared gazpacho, Spanish tortillas, tomato bread, paella and creme Catalan...to finish off! After about 2 hours of cooking, we sat down to eat together and what an amazing meal we had! I have no doubt that everyone involved had a wonderful time. Amelia was the perfect hostess and teacher and we all left with lots of new ideas for Spanish cooking, full bellies and smiles on our faces.

I visited Barcelona with a group of friends and this was by far the most AMAZING experience! From the moment Yves picks you up till the time you are finished you will have a once in a life time experience. If you are looking for a custom, market to table, hands on cooking tour this is the only experience I would recommend. This isn’t only a cooking tour, Yves takes you through the market and teaches you about local food, the history of Barcelona, different regional dishes and anything else you can think to ask him about. For anyone who has dietary restrictions this is a tour that will not disappoint. Since Yves helps you decide on a custom multi course menu he can conform to any dietary requests all while using fresh ingredients and helping you learn how to cook. As someone who has high expectations for food and wine quality I was blown away by the customization and the overall quality of everything during this experience. There is nothing I would have changed about the day my fiends and I had.

A good chef nurtures relationships with suppliers, and knows where to buy great produce and how to choose the best ingredients. Our market tour and cooking class begins with a guided walk around La Boqueria market. As we wander we talk about local culinary customs and how to pick the best local and seasonal produce. We make a few stops to try local cheese, jamon or olive oil before heading back to the the kitchen, just a 5 minute walk from the market, to put your hands to work! We tailor our class menus to what´s fresh and available at the market and we always have a great time in the kitchen, with a glass of wine in hand. We place focus on sustainability, and have plenty of tips and tricks for you to take home with you to avoid excess plastic when shopping, and make the most of your produce and kitchen. We teach everything from Catalan basics & Mediterranean staples to healthy alternatives and fancy techniques to impress your friends. When the work is done we head out onto the adjoining garden terrace to put this finishing touches and enjoy the meal. Here, you can relax and enjoy beautiful food with local organic wines. We treat all our guests as new found friends, and love to share our space and philosophy with them. Before you go, we will load you up with recommendations for our favourite bars, restaurants and things to do in Barcelona. We had such a great time with Ella and Alberto! They took us on a tour of the famous Boqueria Market where we learned about local ingredients, what makes them special, and how to choose the best ones. After buying the produce, we had a short walk back to Espai Egg where we learned how to cook some recipes that I am still making today! We actually prepared and cooked the food ourselves. My favorite was the watermelon gazpacho. Ella and Alberto are dedicated to buying locally sourced produce and were also able to adjust their plans for my vegetarian needs. The cooking space was warm and inviting and we really enjoyed making new friends with the others who came to learn. Ella and Alberto are great teachers! And the best part was sharing all of the wonderful food we had made at the end - local wine included! Delicious! If you love food and great company, I highly recommend this experience!
